We often get asked for advice as to what makes a video go viral and the simple answer is – quality of content!
It really can be as basic as how someone looks as to what makes a user view or click through on a video but we’ve given a more in-depth guide to what we’ve witnessed over the years. We’ve completed promo for artists all over the world in recent years and have noticed trends that compel viewers to stay watching and coming back for more.
Hopefully these music promotion tips will see you on your way to: increased social media growth, increased fan base, gig offers/paid work, collaborations, sponsorships and record label interest – all experiences artists that have worked with us have benefitted from over the past 5 years!
We’ll most likely add to this list as time goes on but the below are some solid tips:-
1. Perform a COVER VERSION as your introduction to the Music Crowns audience (or any other platforms)! Cover versions breed familiarity.
A DOPE original can do equally as well but covers give you an advantage from before you have even started singing if its made clear in the title or description of the video!
2. KIDS, ANIMALS & OLD PEOPLE – if you include these elements you’re more than likely to get extra views and shares – don’t underestimate the power of Super Gran!
3. BRANDED CLOTHING – just like a cover a well-known brand can connect with a viewer. Sounds stupid but it does!
4. BACKGROUNDS – the background of your video is super, super important! People like seeing an insight in to your life, where you are from & what you get up to behind closed doors! Some of the best ones have been in the bedroom, kitchen or even bathroom, likewise scenic backgrounds of the countryside or beautiful buildings & landmarks seem to do really well – it makes the video interesting!
5. VIDEO/AUDIO QUALITY – The video and audio quality is uber-important! If we can’t hear or see you properly it’s hard to judge the performance. We’ve found a lot of sound engineers & music professionals will be at hand to comment on this so make sure you get as crisp a video to us as possible!
6. FRIENDS, FAMILY & FRIENDS TO SHARE – to kick start the viral power it’s always a good idea to lean on your nearest and dearest to start help your video catch fire! It’s also a good idea to support other artists by sharing their music and in return they’ll do the same back with any luck!
7. BE WILLING TO INVEST – big music properties get thousands of submissions a month (trust us!) and therefore need staff to run the show – a small investment in yourself will give you a greater understanding of what people do and don’t like about your music / performance and GUARANTEE yourself a slot on the promotion hub of your choice.
8. BE POLITE – we get around 100 emails a day on a bad day at Music Crowns. Saying ‘SHARE MY MUSIC’ without even so much as a ‘please’ means you’re more than likely to be heading for the trash. Manners cost nothing…
9. KEEP WORKING AT IT – just because one thing you try doesn’t go viral first time around there’s no reason that your next piece of work won’t. We often see artists improve over time and often it’s the 2nd, 3rd or 4th submission that cracks the nut!
10. BE TOPICAL, BE CLASSY, BE ORIGINAL – being abreast of the world music charts can really help you out here – covering the latest hot tune first (& best!) can help you ride the wave of the original artist’s popularity. Similarly, covering an old classic or creating a unique cover of a song (making it your own!) can really stand you in good stead.
11. TAKE CRITICISM – if people criticise you (and they will!) take it in your stride. These people are actually raising the engagement of your post. If people defend you and disagree it causes a torrent of engagement. Even the most successful artists in the world have their haters!
12. DON’T TRY TO BE SOMETHING YOU’RE NOT! – people love ‘genuine’ performances – auto tuning, big productions & fake lifestyles generally don’t sit well with the audience. Strip it back to your voice, your bedroom and you’re on to a winner.
