Stars pay tribute to David Bowie at special Brixton Academy gig

A star-studded line-up paid tribute to David Bowie with a special concert at Brixton Academy last night.

‘Celebrating David Bowie With Gary Oldman And Friends’ saw the actor, friend and collaborator of the late music icon curate a show to mark what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday. The concert featured a host of special guests including La Roux, Simon Le Bon, Keane’s Tom Chaplin and more, as well as past touring members of his band.

The performances were backed by the London Community Gospel Choir, a string section and an all-star cast of Bowie collaborators including guitarist Earl Slick, former King Crimson frontman and touring guitarist Adrian Belew, pianist Mark Garson and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey – who fronted a number of legendary tracks including ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘Young Americans’.

The evening saw performances from Oldman himself, opening with the emotional ‘Dead Man Walking’ before singing ‘The Man Who Sold The World’. La Roux took to the stage to sing a rendition of ‘Golden Years’, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon sang ‘Let’s Dance, and Tom Chaplin covered ‘Life on Mars’. Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliot delivered his take on ‘All The Young Dudes’. “This is a religious experience – let’s take these people to church,” he said, introducing the track.
