Wiley: streaming has the music industry “in a headlock”

Wiley has expressed his frustration at the omnipotence of Apple and Spotify in today’s music industry, exclaiming “they’ve got it in a headlock!”

In a new interview with FACT magazine, the godfather of grime offered his distinctively charismatic opinions on the current state of the industry, Jamaica’s influence on grime and the trajectory of his own career.

On the streaming explosion affecting how his music is marketed consumed, he said: “Since Apple, Spotify and YouTube have taken it and got it into a headlock, it goes quite quick, so I have to to them [the fans] to say how they feel about it.”

Approaching his 40th birthday, Wiley is currently in campaign mode following the release of what he says could be his last album “because obviously I’m older now.”

He also admits that if he wasn’t himself, he wouldn’t manage himself.

Wiley’s latest LP, ‘Godfather’, is out now.
