After the successful partnership behind ‘No (Pecker)’, production wonder-kid Backclash and talented singer-songwriter and beatboxer K Zie have teamed up again to take the Dance music world by storm. Their latest single ‘Sugar Daddy’ has hit the stores and is surely seeking to catapult Backclash and K Zie onto the international electronic music scene. This tandem has a proven track record of producing wonders, and despite their young age, 18 and 19 years old, the pair have already kick started their careers in the best of ways.

We sat down with the guys to find out more about their work and what they have planned ahead.

Hi guys, how are you today and what’s going on around you at the moment?

K ZIE – I am very good thanks! How about yourself? I am currently studying for my examinations for my economics degree but at the same time working on some new music.

BACKCLASH – Hi, Im doing wonderful, just got back from a vacation/shoot from Bangkok!

Where are you guys from?

K ZIE – I am from London, UK.

BACKCLASH – From Mumbai, India.

What made you start your career in music?

K ZIE – I was surrounded by all sorts of music when I was young. I started taking more interest in music when I was around 13 years old and self taught myself to beatbox by watching online videos. I always had a passion for singing and music, I would constantly sing wherever I would I go or when I was with my friends. I think also for me one important factor for me pursuing a career in music was seeing people like Jay Sean, and One Direction break into the US scene and gain a lot of success within the industry. So for British artists to be so successful really inspired and motivated me to develop my musical skills further and pursue a career in music. So after that, at the age of 16 I went onto put out my first music cover on YouTube and from that point onwards I just kept developing myself as an artist.

BACKCLASH – Well my dad was into the music business in India in the early 90’s and I was at the studio one day and accidentally mixed two CD players together, and obviously as a child I was highly fascinated and amused at the outcome. Ever since that day, after being explained that, what I just did was a DJ-ing move, I wanted to make my career in it. And with the help of my dad today I am achieving my dream.

Who were your first influences or artists you looked up to musically?

K ZIE – Micheal Jackson, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Usher, Drake, Trey Songz, Jay Sean, R Kelly, Justin Timberlake, N Sync, Blue, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, 50 Cent, Akon, Bruno Mars.

BACKCLASH – Well, I loved rock music (namely The Cranberries- Zombie, Bon Jovi- It’s My Life….) and then developed my taste eventually for the EDM world. Someone whom I really looked up to since my pre-teen years was Quentin Mosimann. And of course artists like Tiesto, Armin van Buuren & Hardwell.

Could you give as an insight of who you are artistically and what you sound like?

K ZIE – I would consider myself to be artistically similar to Justin Timberlake and Jay Sean because my tone of voice is quite similar to theirs. My range can vary from a baritone to a tenor. I have a fairly soothing and calming voice. However, in my songs I do like to do what they call a ‘rapping-singing’ style. It is basically rapping in a singing way.

BACKCLASH – The way I like to do it is, by starting off my tracks with a mellow breakdown with pianos, strings, voices and then building it up to the drop.

Let’s talk about your latest release, ‘Sugar Daddy’. This is not your first collaboration, how do you consider your working relationship?

K ZIE – I consider my working relationship to be very good with Backclash. We mainly work through the basis of skype due to Backclash being in India and myself being situated in UK. I feel though if we were in the same country it would make our working relationship even better.

BACKCLASH –  K-Zie and I happened to meet in London a couple of months ago, and we bonded over the love for music. And today over Skype calls we have been able to make three songs in six months. Doesn’t sound as tough as it sounds! *haha* Yes, and Sugar Daddy happens to be the latest one of our duos.

Is there any idea you wanted to convey with this record?

K ZIE – What I wanted to convey with this record is that some girls get easily impressed with materialistic things, and as soon as they know you are rich they do not play these so called mind games as opposed to if you just go as an ordinary guy to a club.

BACKCLASH – I was just experimenting and I came up with the melody for Sugar Daddy. It was a completely different kind of song for me, production and vocal wise. After the vocals were laid down, it made the track intense.

How would you describe the workflow behind the making of this track?

K ZIE – It was a very quick process to record this track. Simply Backclash emailed me the track and in a few days I recorded all my vocal parts and sent the project back. After that the track was done! I feel though doing all these tracks independently and without any professional help has enabled me to develop really well as an artist. However, I feel with professional help our music would go to another level.

BACKCLASH –  It took exactly a month to complete the track. I sent the track to K-Zie he loved it, and sent it back to me with vocals and I loved it and boom the song was ready. We worked long hours over Skype calls, and eventually we were able to complete our masterpiece.

What else do you have lined up for 2015?

K ZIE – I am currently working on a few new EDM tracks with Backclash that I will be completing over the summer. Along with that I will be also working on some new RnB material.

BACKCLASH – 2015 is going to be a big year. I just launched myself artistically and have a lot of new stuff I’m working on. Every month I plan on releasing a new single!

You are still very young, where would you like to see yourselves in the five years?

K ZIE – In 5 years time, I would like to see myself signed to a major label and hopefully have my singles charted. But in terms of an artist/individual I would like to have become a better Singer/Songwriter/Performer.

BACKCLASH – 5 years from now, I would love to see myself grown artistically world-wide. I hope to have my own signature sound someday.

In recent years we have seen a rise in vocals within EDM productions. Which is your favourite vocalist-producer combination?

K ZIE – David Guetta ft Akon – Sexy Chick & Dj Snake ft Lil John – Turn Down for What

BACKCLASH – I really like Calvin Harris!

If you could choose to collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

K ZIE – Drake because I think our style of voices would fit together awesomely on a track.

BACKCLASH – Hands down it would be Axwell. I really look up to him and would love to collaborate with him in the future.

Which are your Top 3 tracks of 2015 so far?

K ZIE

Nick Jonas – Jealous,

Chris Brown ft Tyga – Ayo

Kid Ink ft Tyga ft Wale – Ride Out

What advice would you give to young artists who want to develop within this industry?

K ZIE – I would say stay true to yourself and put out music you enjoy and like the sound off! The most important thing is to work to your strengths, develop your skills and keep trying to reach your targets irrespective of other people’s opinion. I never take hate to heart and I never allow myself to get carried away with positivity. I feel you have to be very patient within this industry, but with hard work and a little bit of luck it will be worth it!

BACKCLASH – Live your dream. Don’t give up, do what you love and someday you’ll achieve your dream!

Anything to add or shout outs?

K ZIE – Please follow me on my social media links. Yes, I would like thank all my family and friends for supporting me from day one and please keep on doing so! Also massive shout out to my school WCGS, for everyone there including teachers for always supporting me in my music. Hashtags I would like to get trending are 101, teamkzie, backclashmusic.
