Madonna is playing at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest

Madonna is set to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel next month.

The European Broadcasting Union has confirmed that the 60-year-old singer will not only perform a popular hit but debut a brand new song at the event 18th May.

It’s being reported that the new track has been a source of contention between Madonna and Eurovision producers as it is said to contain political messages.

The upcoming performance, which sees Madonna accompanied by a 160-person entourage, is expected to cost around $1 million (£765,000) – a hefty cost that will be covered by billionaire businessman Sylvan Adams.

It’s a potentially controversial appearance for the singer, after Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, Brian Eno, filmmakers Ken Loach, and Mike Leigh called for a boycott in a letter published in The Guardian which backed an appeal from Palestinian artists.

The letter read: “We, the undersigned artists from Europe and beyond, support the heartfelt appeal from Palestinian artists to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 hosted by Israel.”

Israel will play host to the iconic singing competition after the country’s 2018 competitor, Netta, won with her entry ‘Toy’.
