It’s Friday! In the overwhelming sea of new releases, we’ve picked out some of our favourites for you – featuring GRAACE, Boygenius, Cantaloupe and more. Here are five fresh tracks for new music Friday.
‘Obrit’ – NAO
This Friday, NAO released Saturn – for those less astrologically inclined, the title refers ‘Saturn Returns’, a term that references to the time between moving from your twenties to your thirties as it takes Saturn 29 years to circle the earth from the point of your birth.
Our fresh pick from Saturn is ‘Orbit’ – a gut-wrenching, electric guitar lament about outgrowing bad love. Filled with emotions and vividly tender lyrics carried by a half song, half rap. The entire album is robustly unique, but ‘Orbit’ delivers the kind of sadness that forces growth, encompassing the coming-of-age tale that Saturn tackles: “Won’t do this again / ‘Cause I’ll spin into infinite moons”.
‘Salt in the wound’ – Boygenius
The highly anticipated collaboration between Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker dropped today. Boygenius marries each artist distinctive styles, unifying them in common themes tinged with gritty melancholy.
Throughout the all-too-brief six-track release, ‘Salt in the Wound’ stands out as the most effectively coalescing – hitting off harmonious, building into a crescendo of anger of women tired of being used: “I’m gnashing my teeth / like a child of Kane”.
‘S.O.S’ – GRAACE
Australian singer-songwriter GRAACE dropped her debut EP, Self-Sabotage, today.
It’s hard to pick a single track – the whole thing is worth a listen, poignant with self-reflection about toxic relationships that feels well beyond her 21-years – but ‘S.O.S’ certainly stands out. Featuring heavenly vocals and vulnerability veiled by a highly-crafted pop melody, check it GRAACE’s ‘S.O.S’ below, or stream the full album here.
‘I Thought You’d Know’ – Cantaloupe ft. James Finlay, Angi Fletcher
Electronic-pop duo Cantaloupe shared their second album, Error States. Our pick from their new release is ‘I Thought You’d Know’. It’s effervescing, infections synth-pop at its finest – Grey Hairs’ James Finlay falsetto entwining the hypnotic vocals of Angi Fletcher of the Fists is a match made in heaven.
‘Body Part’ – Pizzagirl
Finally, we have Lo-Fi bedroom artist Pizzagirl, aka Liam Brown, who offered glitchy-pop beat ‘Body Part’ to the Friday mix. Filled with gorgeous 80s synths, some reliable pop and a tinge of emo, it’s taken from Pizzagirl’s second EP season 2, set to arrive on the 30th of November.
