Girl Unit teams with Kelela for new track ‘WYWD (Remix)’

London producer Girl Unit has shared a new track with Kelela called ‘WYWD (Remix)‘.

The new track is a vibesy summer anthem which features a tropical style xylophone melody over a shuffling house beat. Kelela’s silky vocals toy delicately with the beat adding infectious hooks into the mix. Listen to the new cut below.

I remember we’d initially created this slow, sombre ballad that was drenched in reverb with these big piano stabs during the writing process, it always felt like the sentiment of the song was this love letter that hadn’t been sent yet, and the atmosphere of the track reflected that,” Girl Unit explains of the track.

I always knew I wanted to do more with it, so when I had the chance to reimagine the track I had to preserve the song as this moment of honesty but bring it outside. So I laid the vocal over this xylophone pattern and started to offset the notes to make the track bump. Once that was in place it started to make sense to build the whole thing around a 4/4 beat, giving the track this celebratory feel.

WYWD (Remix)‘ comes as the next instalment from the Night Slugs collectives forthcoming compilation, Night Slugs Allstars X, which drops 15th June.

Listen to the Bok Bok and Sweyn J‘s previously released track, ‘Meteorology‘, from the compilation here. Girl Unit’s debut album, Song Feel, is slated for release in October this year.
