The ‘Lemonade’ singer will use her BeyGOOD philanthropic initiative to establish the Homecoming Scholars Award program, awarding $100,000 in scholarships to America’s Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman universities.

Beyoncé’s Coachella performance was packed with a long list of references to America’s historically black colleges and universities – or ‘HBCUs’. 

During the show, Beyoncé also sang the “Black National Anthem (Lift Every Voice and Sing),” which represented a proud moment amid the NFL kneeling controversy.

Other black cultural touchstones during the show included references to Nina Simone (who was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that same night), a sample of a Malcolm X speech declaring that “the most disrespected woman in America is the black woman” and a performance of her 2013 hit ‘Flawless’ featuring the voice of Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie.
