Laura Mvula was dropped by Sony via a forwarded email

Laura Mvula found out she had been dropped by her label through a seven line email which had been forwarded to her.

Speaking in January, the singer revealed she had been let go by Sony. However, she expressed her gratitude about the work they had done together in the Tweet.

Mvula had released albums Sing to the Moon and The Dreaming Room. Both albums were nominated for Mercury Prizes and the former went gold in the UK.

Despite this, Sony dropped her after releasing just two albums. Speaking to the BBC, the Birmingham singer described how she was dropped by the company “I didn’t see anyone, I didn’t hear anybody’s voice. I just read words. It felt so cold and cruel. Not even the fact that I was dropped, the way that the whole thing happened. To be treated like that doesn’t feel quite just.

She continued, “I was definitely naive in the beginning. When I was signed, I thought when someone says, we love you and we’re with you until the end, that’s what they mean.

It doesn’t work like that, it’s business. And that has certain implications if you are not popular or there aren’t enough elements in what you do that draws in the masses. The album culture is, ‘Momentum, please… when’s the next record coming?
