Live Review: Meadowlark @ Kentish Town Forum 25/02/17

The first thing you notice when walking into the Kentish Town Forum is the number of people waiting to see the first band. Meadowlark are the openers for the night, before Islands and the headliners; Nottingham four-piece Amber Runs. The show’s sold out, however, it’s still impressive that Meadowlark have pulled in so many fans.

Despite being a two piece, Meadowlark are able to engage their audience from the off. It could be easy for the audience to become disinterested by the soft ambient music, but Broadley is able to keep up his high energy for the entirety of the performance, spinning his drum sticks and visibly enjoying playing.

Singer, Kate McGill, has a soft voice that occasionally felt lost in the mix. However, she more than makes up for it during the quieter sections. Her voice rings through the venue and grabs everyone’s attention. It’s interesting to witness the pair as they switch between instruments. Although they could get a backing band or some extra help they opt to play everything themselves which is truly a joy to watch. McGill doesn’t keep her talent confined to her vocals as she plays the keys and occasionally joins the other half of Meadowlark, Dan Broadley, in percussion. Broadly does the bulk of the instrumentals as he covers synth, keys and percussion.

The band showcases songs from their various EPs including the incredibly infectious ‘Eyes Wide’. The duo are on the cusp of releasing their EP Nocturnes. The EP will feature alternative versions of some of their previously released tracks, as well as a cover of the SugababesAbout You Know’. The cover is available now and the EP will be available for download on March 10th.
