Earlier this year, Charli XCX released Number 1 Angel, which was billed as a mixtape, hinting that maybe there was more to come in the near future. Today that seems to be confirmed, as we see the release of XCX’s brand new single, ‘Boys‘. More exciting than merely a new track from the pop starlet is the video that comes with it. Charli XCX co-directed the video for ‘Boys‘ and roped in some recognisable musicians for her to boss around, including Mac DeMarco and Diplo. The general conceit of the video is showing men involved in activities that are stereotypically attributed to females. This includes a lot of pink, hair brushing in the mirror, playing with puppies, pillow fights, and more. There are also some ridiculously boyish acts depicted too, from playing guitar topless to playing with fire.
Accompanied by the song’s ultra slick, 80s-indebted pop production and XCX’s delicately dreamy vocals, the overall result is a stylish, amusing and actually, a winning release.
