From growing up performing in a Beatles tribute band to working alongside credible artists, Matt and Andrew Como, otherwise known as The Como Brothers Band, seem very appealing – particularly to fans of Bruno Mars, CeeLo Green and Ed Sheeran. Their latest EP, “Imagination” features Grammy-award winning musician/ John Mayer Trio drummer Steve Jordan, who was responsible for that infectiously funky beat in Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson hit, “Uptown Funk.” Avid fans of The John Mayer band could be in for a treat too; the EP also features renowned keyboardist Andy Burton.
Recorded with Grammy award-winning producer, Graham Marsh (CeeLo Green and Bruno Mars), their fourth EP starts off on a strong footing with “Good Enough For Me”. Lingering among the colourful fusion of pop, soul, the blues with a little funk, there’s a simple but powerful message of self-acceptance, well delivered by Matt.
The brother’s influence from The Beatles is very apparent in “Make My Heart Move”. Matt’s carefree vocals bears a striking resemblance to a young Paul McCarthy, giving the three-minute production that typical 60s British Invasion feel. Track title “Imagination” is a serious bluesy soul affair. Featuring a gutsy execution of the piano, Andrew takes over the vocals and adds meat to the production while still retaining the feather lightness in his voice. The brothers gives the pop treatment to Jimi Hendrix’s hit “Bold As Love” without disregarding that real satisfying 70s psychedelic rock, thanks to the king of groove, Steve Jordan.
With such out-of-this world line-up, I was expecting fireworks of mind-blowing blends of the blues, soul with a little pop. Nevertheless, “Imagination” is a pleasant enough collection that will go down very well with mainstreamers.
