Newly established DJ and production duo Busenmann & Eichelkaiser are starting their journey within the electronic music scene, proposing their unique musical vision and immense talent – aiming to revive old traditions through electronic music.
Whilst now spending most of their time experimenting with new sounds in the studio and cooking up new music, we’ve decided to have a chat with them to get to know them better and unveil what the Busenmann & Eichelkaiser project is all about.
Welcome guys and thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
Which part of the world do you call home?
Sometimes Central Europe, sometimes Southern Europe.
What’s the meaning behind your moniker?
We are ninth generation musicians from the German family BUEK, which immigrated to England in the 18th century. During that period, our ancestors performed at extravagant and ostentatious celebrations in the Baroque underground. Their trademarks were then the tip of the male phallic symbol, the glans, and the female breast. The sexual symbolism was always the main focus and it excited the minds of the largely prudish society of that period.
The BUEK celebrations were attended by high-ranking politicians, aristocrats, doctors, lawyers, judges, wealthy businessmen and women from all social classes. The celebrations with Baroque music were usually held in cellar vaults provided by rich officials and high nobility, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and hidden from the public gaze. This family tradition, passed down from generation to generation and came to an abrupt end due to the turmoil of the First and Second World Wars.
‘BUEK – Busenmann & Eichelkaiser’ in its present form is the revival of the old tradition of our ancestors within the electronic music genre. We guess there isn’t really an English translation for ‘Busenmann & Eichelkaiser’, but it nearly kind of means ‘Boobsman & Glansimperator’ 🙂
Proudest moment of your musical careers so far?
Well, we are just at the beginning 🙂 But we would be proud, if people like what we do some day. Up till now we had a show at the Lake Festival this year – it was a four day festival in Austria in August. Hardwell, Avicii, David Guetta, Calvin Harris as well as more than 90 other well known Djs played there. It was very exciting to be a small part of this event with more than 120,000 people.
When did you first fall in love with music and how did you get into the electronic scene?
Oh, we’ve loved electronic music for as long as we can remember. We started making music in the year 2000 on a small computer with Logic and currently our focus is 100% on the Busenmann & Eichelkaiser project.
What genres do you gravitate towards?
To be honest, it is just good, driving electronic Dance music – whether Techno, Harddance, House, Progressive, with vocals, without vocals etc. When you look at the worldwide electronic music scene, everything is possible…..but it needs to strike us 🙂
Has your sound gone through any changes along the years?
Sure, all is easier now. In the earlier years we had a big and heavy mixing table, loads of hardware synthesizers, compressors, and kilometres of cables. We are traveling a lot and we now just work on a laptop. There we can fix our ideas and when we are back in our studio, we can mix and finalize such ideas. It’s because of our monitor speakers. For mixing and mastering we need to hear a track loud and clear, on a laptop with earphones this is not possible for us.
Who were your early influences and the key people who you looked up to musically?
William Orbit is such a great producer for example. Our first influences came up with the New Beat area in the late 1980s – Belgian electronic underground music. It was a crossover between electronic Dance music and Chicago House & Acid music.
We guess we have more than 250 New Beat vinlys in our archives from that decade – it was a great time.
Tell us more about your production setup and workflow.
We currently work with Ableton Live and tons of plug-ins. For every track we practically use a different setup, we don’t always work with the same setup. It depends on the sound we want and sometimes different sounds will need different setups. That means other group routings with different plug-ins, as well as different master chains.
What are your plans for 2015?
Working on new tracks and make our project Busenmann & Eichelkaiser widely known at the same time.
Where would you like to see yourself in the months and years ahead?
Who knows this? We are not in a hurry, we’ll work step by step, track by track and we hope, that we will speak to many people with our music and finally find a record label who wants to sign this project 🙂
Your all-time favourite track?
Lambda – Hold On Tight (Nalin & Kane Remix)
Your favourite DJs in 2015 and why?
