Introducing: Flatdisk

Flatdisk

DJ and production duo Axel Kim and Leonardo G, jointly known as Flatdisk have become one of Italy’s finest electronic music exports over the last few years. Having come together in 2012, the tandem have developed an intricate Progressive House and Pop infused sound, which is rapidly placing them on the watch-list of the most important entities within the Dance music realm.

In less than three years, Flatdisk have managed to reach some impressive milestones, having landed deals with renowned labels such as: Revealed, Flamingo, Sosumi, Armada, Cr2 and Mixmash to name but a few. Their unique style has also piled up massive support from the world’s most esteemed DJs like: David Guetta, Steve Angello, Hardwell, Nicky Romero, Fedde le Grand, Martin Garrix, Dannic and Dyro amongst many others.

Given their rise onto the international music scene we’ve caught up with the guys to get to know them better and reveal some interesting insights on how their project came together and how it’s now progressing.

Hey guys, how are you today and what’s going on in your world at the moment?

Hello ! We’re doing pretty good thanks. On the train at the minute, coming back from a gig in Milan. We’re working on a lot of new music in the studio and a few collaborations in the making.

Where do you guys live?

We live in Tuscany, right next to the coast.

For those who are not familiar with your sound. How would you describe it?

We would describe our sound as an energetic combination of different vibes 🙂

How did you guys meet and why did you get together as a duo?

We met through a common friend – having the same passion forced us to join forces.

We’ve been in touch with music since we were kids, playing Rock and Pop in various bands and Leonardo studied violin and piano. Then we started producing and DJing just for fun and things evolved quickly.

What differences do you see between working solo and as a back-to-back duo?

Well, working as a duo gives you the chance to compare things very closely.

You’ve got some important achievements on your resumes. Can you highlight some of the most memorable ones?

Yep, we’re proud of our achievements 🙂 We like to highlight the winning of the Revealed remix contest back in 2013 – that was like our beginning, so it’s memorable. Another thing was Steve Angello playing our track at Ultra Music Festival. Steve has always been one of our idols so that was pretty cool 🙂

Looking at the production side of things. Walk us through your current set-up?

For production we’re using Apple/Mac computers with Ableton and Logic. Pro-Tools is on the way as well. Apollo or Fireface rmx 800 as an audio interface and Genelec monitors. Also using some external keyboards sometimes like the Virus or the Prophet – but pretty much everything is made in the box.

What’s the typical approach you guys take when working on a new project?

Oh we don’t really have a typical approach when working on a project, every time is different.

How do you go about blending your own individual tastes into one project?

Well it’s not easy sometimes blending your individual tastes into one project. Sometimes tastes are different but when tastes are on the same wavelength, magic can happen 🙂

Do you have any projects planned for 2015?

For 2015 we have a few collaborations in the making.

If you could collaborate with any artist in the world. Who would it be?

We would collaborate with Marilyn Manson, Madonna, The Beatles and Michael Jackson for sure.

Who’s inspiring you in 2015?

We listen to so much music all the time which gives us ideas and influences. There are so many artists…

Your all-time top 3 tracks?

Best 3 tracks within the House music genre, maybe could be: ‘Watch the Sunrise’ and ‘Feel the Vibe’ by Axwell and ‘Stupid Disco’ by Junior Jack.

Thanks guys!
