A Love For Singing – Interview with a talented singer/songwriter Daisy Day

Daisy Day is a 19 year old singer/songwriter originally from Colchester, Essex. Now she lives in Manchester. Her music style is urban pop/R’n’B. Daisy worked on her debut EP with John Delf (Lily Allen, PlanB, The Script). She is currently working on her new mini album. I spoke to her about her new material, her youtube covers, Essex, dream-collaboration, writing new songs and plans for the future.

Piotr Balkus: Hi Daisy, you are back in the studio recording new songs. How does it feel?
Daisy Day: It feels so great to be back in the studio recording. I’ve had a very exciting start to 2015, as I’m lucky enough to be working with Ivor Novello Award Winning Producer, Writer and Drummer Cassell The Beatmaker, in his studio in London. We have been working on some brand new material and I’m really looking forward to sharing it with everyone when it’s finished!

Your latest EP is called “Control Freak”…
My EP ‘Control Freak’ which I released 2014 last year is about people trying to take control of every situation they’re in. “Control Freak” was recorded in 2013, however I’m currently working on a new project which involves the development and production of four brand new tracks! I’m very excited for everyone to hear them when they’re finished as I feel like the tracks have a more current ‘pop’ vibe. I had so much fun in studio working on them!

I haven’t heard new songs yet, but I know one is called “Winner”, and another one is called “Serenade”. Can you tell us a bit more about these two songs?
“Winner” is co-written with Cassell The Beatmaker and basically talks about challenges that people face in every day life and how they can overcome them. It focuses on two people’s problems in particular, and how they manage to move forward by turning the negatives into a positive, which I think is a really important message to convey. “Serenade” takes a slightly different path, concentrating on the topic of love. The song holds a lot of emotion about trying to get over someone you have fallen in love with. I hope that my fans can really relate to “Serenade”, as having quite a young fan base, many will have been in a similar situation.

Recently you posted new cover of Meghan Trainor “Lips Are Movin”. Personal choice or just a random pick?
It was definitely personal pick! I chose the song because I think it’s really catchy and as soon as I heard it on the radio I really liked it.

Music was always a big part of your life. Have you ever thought why?
My Uncle Dennis was really talented at music and piano in particular, so I would say that I learnt a lot from him when I was younger and must have inherited his ear for music. Funnily enough music only became really important to me during my early years and secondary school, where I would spend all my time in the music building, developing my song writing skills, and obviously discovering my love for singing. Music was never really just a subject at school to me, it was more of an emotion. And the feeling that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

You come from Essex. How did it influence you as a person and as a musician?
Well firstly my accent definitely influences my music. I think it’s different, and I think it puts an unusual quirky spin on my pop tracks. Secondly I got to spend a lot of time in some studios in the countryside with amazing scenery, which I believe had an influence on the types of songs I wrote. I also use the bad weather to my advantage, as I can actually write a really emotional song if it’s raining!

You shared stage with Connor Maynard, Foxes and Union J, also supported Stooshe. Any artists you’d love to share a stage with in 2015?
I would love to feature on one of Disclosure’s tracks, and am also a big fan of Chase&Status and Rudimental. But talking about an artist in particular I would say Sam Smith. I’m an absolutely massive fan! I think his music is so inspiring and his voice is incredible.

What will be your next cover on youtube? Any chance for Spandau Ballet? [Spandau Ballet one of the bands Daisy’s parents used to listen to at home when she was a small girl]
I actually have only listened to Spandau Ballet when I was younger, as I was influenced by my dad! But I am loving the soundtrack of the new film “Fifty Shades of Grey”, sung by Ellie Goulding. So “Love me Like you do” is a strong contender!

What are your music plans for 2015?
I’m currently working on some new material with Ivor Award Winning Producer and Writer Cassell The Beatmaker in his recording studio in London. I’m hoping to be gigging a lot around London and am also writing for other artists as well as myself which is amazing. So far, it’s been a busy start to 2015, but I’m hoping that things will get a LOT busier!
