Fast rising production duo Stephan Jordan have been causing huge waves since they exploded on to the Dance music scene. After gaining monumental support from tastemakers including MYNC, the exciting pair have released music renowned labels such as Cr2 Records, Generation, La Musique Fantastique, Vinyl Pushers – achievements many aspiring artists strive to achieve.
Teaming up with Stephan Jordan is Australian hot shot Adventus, who marks the release of their hit collaboration ‘Another Life’, as his first ever official release. We caught up with Stephan Jordan and Adventus to talk about everything behind the scenes of ‘Another Life’.
Hi guys, thanks for taking time to answer these few questions. For those who aren’t familiar with you, can you tell us a bit out yourself?
Stephan Jordan: We are brothers born on the island of Mauritius but we now reside in Melbourne, Australia. Coming from a musical family, (Dad and Uncle were both professional musicians back in the days) playing an instrument was just part of our lifestyles. We have been producing music together for about 5 years now and we love Progressive/Electro House and are always inspired by artists such as Sick individuals, Axwell, Kaskade and Deadmau5. We love creating Epic/Trippy breaks and melodies.
Adventus: Well I grew up in a small country town called Baranduda, where I first started taking an interest in Electronic music and production. There wasn’t much of a Dance music scene there, so I have recently moved to Melbourne where the Electronic music has much more of a presence. I have been producing music for a couple of years now, and have always been inspired by artists such as Kryder, Tom Staar, Axwell, etc. and try to create groovy Electro House records.
How would you describe a typical Adventus & Stephan Jordan track using only five words?
Stephan Jordan/Adventus: Emotional, groovy, melodic, driven and punchy.
You have recently just released your newest single ‘Another Life’. How did the collaboration come about?
Stephan: Ben (Adventus) and I met through common friends about a year ago and we’ve always been listening to each other projects and exchanging ideas etc. About 3 months ago Ben asked me to listen to a riff he was working on and we decided to do collaboration and see what happened.
‘Another Life’ was released on AtomicSky Recordings, can you tell us a bit about the story behind signing the track to the label and why did you decide to sign it to them?
Stephan Jordan/Adventus: Well we had been following AtomicSky and their releases since the beginning and we really liked the music that was coming from the label, so we decided to send them the track and they really liked it. Matt and the entire team at AtomicSky Recordings are so dedicated and hardworking, and they also made us feel so welcome in the AtomicSky family.
Can you tell us a bit about your workflow when producing ‘Another Life’? How did you start the production?
Stephan Jordan/Adventus: Believe it or not but the 3 of us have never actually sat down in the same studio. The production originally started with the drop melody and a nice groove. We first started layering synths, and then added other drums and FX to help the groove and flow of the track. We all pretty much work with Ableton Live, which makes it easier for us to share sessions back and forth over the Internet. Once the breakdown was finished we actually sent the instrumental to our good mate Jakkcity in London. The first drafts we received were pretty good and about a week later, after a few tweaks back and forth we were all 3 finally happy with the vocals and locked in that version. It ended up being the final vocals for Another Life.
What do you enjoy the most about producing? Programming drums, writing melodies?
Stephan Jordan: Writing Melodies/Chords Progressions
Adventus: Definitely writing nice melodies.
Do you guys mix and master your own productions or do you get help from an engineer?
Stephan Jordan/Adventus: We mixed and mastered this track ourselves. Sometimes we do get our productions mastered by a professional mastering engineer.
How long did it take to produce the record?
Stephan Jordan: About 3 weeks, and then another week while waiting for the final vocals. Hmmm and maybe an extra couple of days to do tiny adjustments on the record we would say from start to finish, about a month.
Will you be doing a production walkthrough of the track?
Stephan Jordan: This is something that we never quite thought about yet, but now that you did mention it, that would be something we will definitely love to do.
Where did you get your inspiration from when producing the track?
Stephan Jordan: We have been influenced mainly by the tracks we play in our sets and the music we listen to daily. We love groovy vibes and we have been listening to a lot of music from Tom Staar, Kryder, and Sick Individuals lately.
Adventus: Tom Staar’s music definitely had a big influence on the style of the track. We were aiming for something that was very energetic but then has a nice emotional breakdown with catchy vocals.
Can we expect a follow up to ‘Another Life’ in a similar style
Stephan Jordan/Adventus: Definitely yes, we are actually 75% done with our new track and we are waiting and trying some new singers [Laughs]. ‘Similar style’ I don’t know but definitely powerful and melodic.
What can we expect in terms of future releases and plans from Adventus & Stephan Jordan?
Stephan Jordan: We have a new track coming out on AtomicSky Recordings on the 22nd of July. This one is quite special to both Jordan and myself as we produced that track about 3 years ago. Our good friend Jason Heerah (X-Factor Australia) lends his voice and writing skills to make the track what it is today. So people stay tuned for ‘Walking away’ – Stephan Jordan feat Jason Heerah coming out on the 22nd of July on AtomicSky Recordings.
