Album Review: Tear A Hole in the Collective Vision – The Unravelling

I remember reviewing The Unravelling’s singles, “Master Drone” and “Revolt” and it was nothing short of a hell raising and dark affair. Now the Calgary duo released their album, “Tear A Hole in the Collective Vision” and I suspect it will be one spine-chilling journey. I was slightly taken back as the majority of the tracks in the collection are, on the contrary, a little more sedated but still retaining that intensity of darkness, mainly well executed by the proclaimed vocals and guitar.

“The Hydra’s Heart” introduces the album with a real heavy, downtrodden drive with high-pitched overtones offering some lightness. However, like “Master Drone” and “Revolt”,  the track title (Tear A Hole in the Collective Vision) offers more of the blood rushing stuff that they’re known for: a mammoth bassline that slipped further into the darkness, giving that satisfying rush. Slipping back to slight lightness, “Out of Depths” could be described as one-of-kind track: it features a feather-light overtone that gives of a modern new wave feel.

Their signature dense bassline picks up speed and goes on a hell raising trip in “Enough Is Enough.” Through this track, the guitar becomes barely audible, becoming again sedated. “No One’s Song” gives that blood thirsty rush a rest by opting for an airy and atmospheric drive that gives the production pure tranquillity. The duo couldn’t help but head straight back to the dark side with “We Have No Problems” with the vocals and guitar becoming more proclaimed than ever.

The guys behind  such intense masterpieces, Steve Moore and Gustavo de Beauville, are determined to make 2015 their year. Following the 2010 acclaimed album “13 Arcane Hymns”, the band was forced into hiatus due to Moore’s diagnosis with throat cancer. Now they’ve returned, armed with more airtight and soul-ripping productions, firmly designed to hit true full on rock fans and critics right between the eyes. No doubt, “Tear A Hole in the Collective Vision” will ignite the flame that was created in their previous efforts.
