Earlier this year, rising English Hip-Hop artist Mason Meyers, better known by his stage name M. J. Meyers, placed his first mark on the music scene with the release of his debut single, ‘Bad History’. Introducing us to his unique and vibrant brand of hip-hop and rap-led artistry, M. J Meyers has certainly began making a name for himself as a rising new talent and an artist to watch this 2022. Building on his debut release, earlier this month, Meyers debuted his first extended project with the release of his 7-track album, ‘Hollow Shell of a Better Man (A Painful Representation of an Unsatisfying Existence)’. Giving us a deeper insight into his artistry, and a new taste of his sound and style, Meyers continues to showcase his artistic skill and talent.
Kicking off the record is a brief 35 second intro that brings us into, and introduces us to, the sonic world of the album. Short but sweet, ‘Hollow Intro’ delivers a minimalistic and atmospheric, synth-style instrumental, placed below a spoken word narrative from Meyers that introduces the project. Following on from this, we get the first of the full-length songs on the record, ‘Hollow Shell’. Melodic, with a rhythmic and low-tempo beat, ‘Hollow Shell’ is a vibrant and emotive rap-led track that features an incredible guitar interlude and really highlights the diversity of Meyers’ artistry. As we work our way through the album, we experience a range of emotions and energies; reflecting all the ups and downs we, and Meyers, experience throughout life.
From more up-tempo and melodic stylings on ‘Bad History’, to grittier and deeper rap and hip-hop vibes on ‘Better Man’, there is no doubt something for everyone on this album. Adding to the sound and style of the album, the record sees Meyers team up with Rob and Violetta for some incredible collaborations on ‘Dunno Why’ and ‘Die 22’. An overarchingly melancholic album, drawing upon existential themes, there are still nonetheless moments of positivity and light throughout the vibrant and eclectic soundscapes.
