5 Fresh Tracks for New Music Friday

Bank holiday, is it? The only thing we’ve been banking on is some banging new tunes. And boy, have we got ’em. We’ve rounded up the five freshest tracks to drop this week, featuring: Talkboy, City Calm Down, Cold Showers, Cate La Bon, and Declan Welsh and The Decadent West. The perfect soundtrack for knocking yourself into a chocolate-egg-induced coma – or whatever floats your boat. Enjoy!

Talkboy‘Wasting Time’

Leeds six-piece Talkboy have shared their sparkling fourth single, ‘Wasting Time’.

Released via Come Play With Me / LAB Records, it’s a track gleaming with swaying, sweet melodies, and addictive hooks – check it out below.

Of the new track, the group said: “It’s a juxtaposition of coming to terms with added responsibilities whilst trying to make the most of the present”.

City Calm Down ‘Television’

Aussie four-piece City Calm Down have returned with new single, ‘Television’. Listen below.

Recorded with Burke Reid, the producer behind the likes of Courtney Barnett, The Drones, and Julia Jacklin, ‘Television’ is abrasive and poignant: a fittingly massive return for the Melbourne group, who last dropped new material in 2018 with their record, Echoes In Blue.

The group are gearing up to release their third album later this year via I OH YOU.

You can catch City Calm Down on their UK headline tour from September 2019.

Cold Showers‘Shine’

Cold Showers have shared their new single ‘Shine’, with a stunning accompanying video.

It’s the second single to be taken from the band’s upcoming album Motionless, which is set to drop 24th May via Dais Records.

Director Travis Waddell said of the video: “‘Shine’’s textures are a reverent nod to MTV-era music video etherea. The 16mm footage shot between Bolinas and Pt. Reyes backdrops Nicola Collie’s movements, a performance so immersive she nearly threw out her neck.  From concept to completion it spans over half a year’s work, which allowed it to reform and define itself.”

Cate Le Bon‘Home To You’

Cate Le Bon has shared the second single from her highly-anticipated second album.

‘Home To You’ will appear on her forthcoming sophomore release, Reward, due next month (24th May) via Mexican Summer.

It’s accompanied with stunning visuals directed by visual artist and filmmaker Phil Collins and co-produced with Kino Úsmev in collaboration with the residents of Lunik IX neighbourhood of Košice in Eastern Slovakia.

Declan Welsh and The Decadent West – ‘Absurd’

Glaswegian outfit Declan Welsh and The Decadent West further solidify themselves as one of Scotland’s most promising talents, today releasing ‘Absurd’; the debut single from their upcoming full-length release.

‘Absurd’ strikes the perfect balance between personal and political, a poignant depiction of the current climate for working-class artists: fraught with compromise and financial insecurity all the while vying with the commodification of “wokeism”. Check it out below.

Declan Welsh says of the track: ‘The tune starts of with me being a bit hopeless and dejected, like what is the fucking point. It’s a wee bit self referential in that its a meta-song, (can you say anything without sounding contrived). I had a Che Guevara T-shirt and wore it out in a fucking moronic display of performative communism. It ends with a bit of a mission statement of how to navigate this landscape, like don’t just say stuff to look like you have moral fiber, forgive yourself for the fact we all have to exist, and try your best to self reflect and be a better artist and human being, not for yourself, but because the world needs better artists and better human beings. The fact the la la la las follow the chorus is deliberate, it’s like fuck it what’s the point in saying anything here’s a catchy hook.’
