Ariana Grande signs away 90% of ‘7 Rings’ royalties to Sound Of Music writers

Ariana Grande has reportedly signed 90 percent of the royalties she made from ‘7 Rings’ over to the estates of Rodgers and Hammerstein, who penned the iconic musical ditty, ‘My Favourite Things’.

The pop titans chart-topping single, taken from her critically acclaimed fifth studio album Thank U, Next, borrows a melody which was written by the pair for 1959 classic, The Sound Of Music.

‘7 Rings’ sat at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart for the sixth time this week, just another win for the record-breaking song which, despite only being released in January, has been streamed over a billion times worldwide.

Late last year, Grande’s team and label, Republic, ironed out an agreement with Concord, the organisation that owns Rodgers and Hammerstein’s catalogue of music, ahead of ‘7 Rings’ January release.

While Grande’s team didn’t dispute the proposed royalty payment, The New York times noted that the unusually lucrative deal was a reflection of the “the leverage owners have” over artists using evergreen song catalogues.

The remarkable payment comes after Gwen Stefani paid 50% of her royalties to the same organisation, in order to sample a yodelling from The Sound of Music’s ‘Lonely Goatherd’ on her 2006 hit ‘Wind It Up’.

On Tuesday ( 19th March), Grande kicked off her Sweetener 2019 tour in Albany, New York.
