Behind The Scenes Of Nurii’s ‘Paradise’

nurii

It comes as no surprise that high-flying Kenyan DJ and producer Nurii has become one of Africa’s most talked about and exciting artists on the Dance music circuit, thanks to his exhilarating studio productions. With records such as his official remix of Robbie Rivera’s ‘Move That Ass’, which was released on his Juicy Music imprint, and releases on labels like Peak Hour Music, he has been gaining monumental support from A-List stars such as Cedric Gervais – accomplishments many aspiring artists strive to achieve.

We managed to fit ourselves into Nurii’s hectic schedule and have a chat about his latest record ‘Paradise’, which is out now as a free download via his official Soundcloud page.

Hi Nurii, thanks for being here with us. How are you and what’s going on around you at the moment?
I’m doing great, I’ve been up to quite a lot so far.

You’ve just released a new single by the name of ‘Paradise’. How did this project come about?
I produced this track just after my girlfriend’s father passed away. I was very close to him and wanted to do something special in his honour.

How would you describe this record in terms of style and sound?
It’s a Tropical House track with a deep and emotional sound.

Where did you draw inspiration for it?
I was very sad during his passing away so I decided to focus my emotions into making the track.

How long did it take to complete this production?
Two days, but a lot of work was done after I completed the rough idea, so about a week and a half.

Could you walk us through the production process behind ‘Paradise’?
I wanted to achieve a Deep House sound similar to what I did with ‘Fly Away’. I’ve found that my audience and fan base love relaxed tempo tracks with instruments such as trumpets, flutes etc. Those kinds of instruments give the track an overall natural vibe and feel. I focused a lot on the bass-line that comes in just before the main drop, I spent a lot of time on it. The melody that comes in with the flute is what makes this track feel like you are sitting on the beach relaxing. Just after that I bring in a trumpet, I used a similar trumpet in ‘Fly Away’, which I had saved in my sample library. The track then breaks down and continues with the trumpet, which I muted down a bit to add some contrast to the track. It then goes back up to the original melody with the flute and builds back to the first drop. Thinking of it now, I could have done something different for the second drop – will do this the next time!

Which plug-ins and sounds shaped this project?
Massive, Sylenth, Kickstart, Serum are the most used plugins in the track. I also used Q2 by FabFilter and Ableton’s built in compressor.

Paradise’ was released as a free download via your official Soundcloud page. What where your reasons for releasing it for free?
I wanted this to be free because it was dedicated to someone special to me, and I also wanted everyone to be able to download it without any hassles – that’s why it’s a direct download without a fan gate to like and follow me to be able to get the track. So far so good, it’s received about 760 downloads J

Where would you imagine this production being played?
At the beach or a chilled out night club.

Describe ‘Paradise’ in three word.
Emotional, Deep, Peaceful.

Why should people listen to ‘Paradise’?
If you like Tropical House tracks, you’ll love this!

Do you have any other projects in the pipeline this year?
I have many projects that I have completed but nothing is fully scheduled for a release yet.
