Billie Joe Armstrong hints at switching genders of American Idiot musical cast

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has dropped a hint that he might gender-swap the American Idiot musical.

The musical, which debuted back in 2010, is soundtracked by the band’s 2004 album Dookie and their 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown follows the story of Johnny, a teenager living in Jingletown, USA.

Armstrong attended a recent production of the musical which saw the character’s genders swapped.

After the performance, the singer took to Instagram to congratulated the cast at Chapman College in California, hinting at a new concept that would see the character’s genders swapped around.

“So stoked for @cadebecker1 and the cast of American Idiot performing at Chapman college!! Congrats to all of you,” Armstrong wrote in his post, “(on a side note I was wondering what it would be like if someone did a production where the men and women switched roles. Johnny be played by a woman? Whatsername be Whatshisface? I like it).”

The gender switch idea comes a week after the band announced that they would be releasing a new graphic novel, described as a “handbook for the rebellious everywoman who refuses to capitulate.”

Just yesterday (8th April), Billie Joe Armstrong collaborated with Morrissey’s on his latest single ‘Wedding Bell Blues’. Listen to that here.
