Coast To Coast Discuss The Artwork Of ‘Dwell’

Coast To Coast’s first strike is debut E.P, Dwell, a collection of dynamic rock nuggets which sees the band treading a line between pop punk and pop rock; Kei Hyland’s idiosynchratic vocals soaring atop the mix like a Hawk on an updraft.  “With this being our first EP we didn’t want to bolt ourselves down to a single genre,” states Kei. Completed by guitarists Alex Edge and Josh Taylor and drummer Darius Walters, Coast To Coast are a distinctly British band, perpetuators of their own self-effacing Twitter hashtag #dadbodsquad, and the nickname “Sad Sods With Dad Bods”. Here they give you an insight into the creation of their artwork…

C2C Artwork

Just after recording ‘Dwell’ we turned our attention to the artwork. We worked with a few artists and got a few ideas down. We originally settled on an idea for a ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’-esqe theme – we had the artwork made up and even brought it, it was all ready to go! But in the following weeks, a lot of band’s came out with artwork for their releases with a similar art style.

We didn’t want to just be part of the crowd; we didn’t feel like the artwork we had stood out and in hindsight it didn’t fit the themes of the EP very well. So we decided to scrap the artwork we had and try something else. I (Alex) began trying to get some ideas down for it. I’m not an artist at all and I don’t have any experience with making artwork/graphics, but I persisted and we ended up going with what I came up with.

The EP has recurring themes of dwelling on the past or on decisions yet to be made, so we thought having an irreversible action in the artwork would make a lot of sense. It symbolises how people tend to overthink things that have already happened, that we no longer have any power to change. Once you have burnt a match it is gone, you can’t get it back to an pre-lit or lit state. Once I showed the guys the design we all liked it so much we went with it!
