Genesis’ Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford reunite to perform ‘Follow You, Follow Me’

Ex-bandmates Phil Collins and guitarist Mike Rutherford performed ‘Follow You, Follow Me’ together on stage during Collins’ solo show on Friday night.

Despite being the first time the duo appeared together on stage in over a decade, the collaboration didn’t come wholly as a surprise, as Rutherford’s band, Mike + The Mechanics, opened for Collins earlier in the evening.

Throughout the last year, all four members of Genesis have expressed interest at a potential reunion. Keyboard Tony Banks quipped, “it would be fun to try”, while guitarist Steve Hackett told his bandmates to “call me if they need me”.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Rutherford stated: “I always say, ‘Never say never,’”. In an interview with the same publication in August 2018, Collins gave more insight on the matter, even going so far as to say he would be open to a reunion with his son playing drums. “If we did anything I think it would have to be with Nic on drums because I don’t think I’m capable of it,” he said. “I think [Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford’s] opinion of Nic is high enough for them to take him on board as part of the band…I’m saying this to you, I haven’t really said it to Tony and Mike. I did mention to Tony very quietly if we did anything again it would be with Nic on drums. He kind of didn’t say no. But I’m not sure if he heard me or not.”
