‘Hopeless But Hoping’: Sheffield’s Story Discuss Their EP Artwork

It’s no secret that genres ain’t what they used to be; what this means for new music in 2016, is that we’re all witness to artists bending and building once familiar tropes into all sorts of new and different shapes, thrillingly unaware of the supposed lines in the sand. Sheffield’s Story are very much a product of these shackles being off, the quintet openly wearing a cache of influences on their sleeve. Channelling the likes of Mallory Knox and Young Guns as readily as Architects, A Day To Remember and Alexisonfire, Story create a seamless pop rock / metalcore / post-hardcore mash-up in the process. Here they discuss the recent release, Hopeless But Hoping’s artwork…

Story Artwork

Before writing the EP we already had a story to tell and an image in mind. Bill came up with the EP name ‘Hopeless But Hoping’ way before it was even finished and so finding art work wasn’t a rush. The title comes from our track of the same name, which is all about how no matter how hard life can be at times, we should always hope for the better, as everything happens for a reason. The lyrical inspiration came from literally every single dark time in each of our pasts, and building on them in the most positive way possible.

As a photographer before the band I was aware of a few photography sites where local artists sell their products/ stock photos. In our artwork we wanted to display positivity over negativity and so whatever bad happens, good will come out on top. We wanted to create a realistic perspective to make this release more relatable, this being the reason for using a real life photograph.

Our artwork shows a girl lost, stranded, blind to where she is, surrounded by nothing and no one. However, she carries herself with positive body language suggesting she is waiting, she hasn’t given up. As a band we feel this subtle, simple use of imagery explains everything and that it allows people to take it in to their own perspective and direct it at their own situations.
