Milquetoast & Co. is back at it again, sporting a swinging new single titled ‘Mindful Maze’. Music Crowns has the exclusive premiere a day early in anticipation of the song dropping on Friday August 13, 2021. This addition to the Denver-based alternative band may surprise older fans due to its emphasis on western swing as opposed to the blues and alt-rock orientation the band has sported in the past, but the single showcases the sextet at their very best.
‘Mindful Maze’ is an entrancing drinking game of a song, conjuring images of Jay Gatsby cheersing a glass of golden champagne to the alluring, dangerous western saloons and casinos of a time long ago. Lead singer James McAndrew’s crisp vocals feel incredibly authentic to the era the single is paying homage to while an impeccable rhythm section encompasses the unique genre forged by Milquetoast & Co.
For a genre as busy and orchestrated as swing, this sextet is excellent at following their ears and giving each other room to shine or breathe. The simplistic lyrics take on a bold tone that at times anchors the direction of the song until McAndrew quickly sweeps up high after the verses, floating back down into his blues-informed vocal style. ‘Mindful Maze’ showcases one of the unspoken traits of what it means to be a true “alternative” band, and that means being able to deliver a recognizable sound that fits the glove of any genre. Predicting the style of Milquetoast & Co.’s next release might prove to be very difficult, but the only certainty is that they will continue to sound like themselves!
