Myspace has lost 12 years worth of music

Reports are circulating on that 12 years worth of data uploaded to Myspace has been lost due to a “server migration project.”

The issue affects 50 million songs uploaded between 2003 and 2015 by 14 million artists.

Myspace music pages currently display a grey bar which reads: “As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your back up copies.”

Reacting to the news on Twitter, tech expert Andy Baio said: “I’m deeply skeptical this was an accident. Flagrant incompetence may be bad PR, but it still sounds better than “we can’t be bothered with the effort and cost of migrating and hosting 50 million old MP3s.“”

In the late 2000s, Myspace was one of the top social media platforms and the most commonly used music hosting platform for artists and labels.

Many artists the ilk of Kate Nash, Adele, Arctic Monkeys, and Klaxons utilised the site to upload their earliest music and can credit the site to playing a significant role in launching the careers.

The rise of emerging social media like Facebook saw the site begin to lose its value and its user base began to significantly dwindle in recent years, despite still maintaining an estimated 50 million users per year.
