Review: Michael Nau – ‘Mowing’

Michael Nau has just released his solo debut album, ‘Mowing’. Originally published earlier this year, ‘Mowing’ is due for release in Europe with the bonus track ‘Love Survive’; a composition that evokes the legendary Lee Hazlewood, with Nau’s wife and bandmate Whitney McGraw providing backing vocals.

The American singer-songwriter effortlessly showcases his stand-out ability to write exciting folk songs. With soft, chamber-pop flavoured guitar and Cat Stevens-like vocals, the whole record smells of suffering and serenity.

Nau has been connected to two different recording projects in the past; the Suicide Squeeze-signed Page France and Cotton Jones and The Broadway Hush; a duo responsible for creating soft and emotional indie-folk.

‘Mowing’ consists of eleven tracks and a delicious mix of eccentric psychedelia-refined pop, country, soul and gospel. ‘So So Long’ is so gentle that it could almost be John Lennon. ‘Love Survive’, the first single from the album, is entirely captivating and contains all of the spirit and emotion this introspective could possibly offer.

Michael Nau has once again confirmed himself as a refined composer, a knock-out vocalist, and a brilliant musician. After six years of silence, he has chosen to return eponymously and it doesn’t take long to recognise that he’s made the right choice.

This record is recommended for sophisticated tastes and for those who, for the time it takes to listen to eleven tracks, want to lose themselves entirely.

‘Mowing’ is out on 18th November 2016 via Full Time Hobby.
