Review: NAO – Bad Blood

NAO’s latest single, ‘Bad Blood’, announces the upcoming release of her new album. Still, if this singles represents what’s to come, the chances are that the whole album will be a bit generic.

On the upside, ‘Bad Blood’ starts with some pretty promising, strong vocals. A minute later, NAO’s impressive soprano is overshadowed by instrumentals.

Without any doubt, there was an attempt to give the song a stronger sound by using drum patterns and heavy synths. Coupled with NAO’s sweet voice, the synth rhythm was supposed to create a deep, lasting impression, however they don’t quite succeed.

The lyrics seem to be of entirely different subjects. The opening strophes sound like they are actually related to one another, but the refrain ruins this impression entirely. After all, how is “I think it’s a bad, bad blood” connected to remembering a holiday? Wrapped up with a generic “But my heart’s drowning pulse of you/ I lose/ Don’t tell me I’m coo-coo /Coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-ooh-ooh”, the song feels like it was written by a drunk – which might makes sense on holiday.

All in all, there is nothing more to NAO’s ‘Bad Blood’ except NAO’s vocals; they’re great, but do little to stand out from the crowd.
