7 bands from Malta you should be paying attention to

It can be easy to miss out on the incredible talents that other countries have to offer when Hollywood seems so focused on English speaking artists. In a new weekly feature, we’re going to be giving unsung artists from across the globe the kudos they deserve.

First up: Malta. We have explored a number of excellent bands whose sounds range from psychedelic rock to hip-hop, rap and more. Get listening.

Red Electrick

Red Electrick are steadily becoming a household name with their bluesy 70s rock-influenced style. The five-piece band burst onto the Maltese airwaves back in 2011 with their bouncy debut single ‘The End Of It All‘ and they are showing no signs of slowing down. The band dropped their sophomore record, Inside You, back in 2016.

Bark Bark Disco

The experimental sound of Bark Bark Disco can range anywhere from funky electro-pop to roaring indie rock. Merging elements of electronic production with melancholy vocals and moody guitar riffs Bark Bark Disco provide a raw sound that will always keep you guessing. The band formed back in 2010 and are part of the So Lo-Fi music movement.

The New Victorians

Sister duo The New Victorians have had a busy year planning their next release and raising funds via their crowdfunding page to make it happen. The pair have already got an album under their belt amongst two other EPs and are now are preparing a new concept EP with three accompanying music videos. The girls, Bettina and Philippa, are both born performers and have appeared on numerous Maltese airwaves and tv networks including Cisk‘s Malta Unplugged Sessions.

215collective

Made up of three Maltese hip-hop artists, Caro, Eddie Fresco and Yannick, the 215collective are becoming one of the hottest rap groups on the rock. Taking influences from Atlanta trap and UK grime the emerging collective have carved our a sound that Malta’s rap scene should be proud of.

Airport Impressions

By simply just listening to Airport Impressions it becomes clear that the group have embraced their influences in country music with open arms. Blending a colourful combination of pop, country and folk rock the band boast a traditional sound with just the right amount of contemporary flair. With a song for every mood, the group’s 12-track album Mariette is available to stream worldwide now.

*etnika blend rustic instruments with deep modulating synth work to create an enchanting contrast through their sound. Layering traditional songs and lyrics over effected guitars, unconventional percussion and more, this Maltese band combine the essence of Malta with modern times.

Plato’s Dream Machine

For fans of Hot Chip, Tame Impala, Friendly Fires and other electronic indie bands, Plato’s Dream Machine are the band for you. Vibrant synths and haunting vocals make up this five-piece band’s “metaphysical rock” sound. Plato’s Dream Machine are fun, infectious and bring the sound of indie-pop to the dancefloor.
