GETTING TO KNOW: Chayla Hope

Chayla Hope is an artist who is bringing the next wave of pop.  An esteemed member of the LGTBQA+ community, Chayla definitely brings a sense of empowerment that is unrivalled and it seems like nothing is going to stop her in her tracks. Her latest single ‘Long Way’ is a triumphant funk pop anthem that you could easily hear amongst the very best of the modern day pop stars. We sat down with Chalya to learn more about her and what’s on the horizon for Music Crowns.

Hey Chayla, welcome to Music Crowns! How are you?

Hey Music Crowns! I’m wonderful! Hope you are well.

Could you describe your sound & style for any of our readers who may not have heard of you before?

I love driving beats and lots of synth as a soundtrack for lyrical heartache. There’s just something about it. My voice is theatrical and I want to go down as one of pop’s classic voices.

Give us a fun fact about yourself we can’t find from Google/social media!

Before going into music full time I was once a machinist by day and a female drag queen/king by night at Bounce Night Club.

Please tell us all about your new single ‘Long Way’?

My debut album Damn, Feelings is full of referential moments, this song especially! “Long Way” is about the feeling of impermanence you sometimes get growing and experiencing life with someone, knowing and eventually telling them it might not last forever. I love the sounds of the ’80s and ’90s and my producer and I really wanted to take people back in time.

We see you’re an LGBTQA+ artist and activist which is amazing, what do you feel your music can do for the community?

Honestly, I hope my music embraces people and helps them feel accepted and a little less alone. Everyone deserves to feel that.

Please tell us a bit about your creative process when it comes to songwriting?

My creative process usually involves getting hurt, crying at my piano or synth when no one’s around, and playing until I play or sing something so good it starts to hurt a little less. Then I start recording and let it all fall out. I keep what works, pitch what doesn’t, and brainstorm around the parts not already written. By then the excitement normally has me feeling a million times better, so I call a producer and work with them to make the idea the best it can be.

Who or what influences your sound?

Robyn, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Whitney Houston and whatever I’m going through at the moment.

& Lastly, what can fans expect from Chayla Hope?

I want fans to feel at home in my music, to hear what’s going on in my journey and have it resonate with them as well. My debut album comes out on October 28th and I have no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Remixes and more singles are coming and I can’t wait for all of it! The more I get into the industry, the angrier and sadder I get, so my new songs are going to reflect that.
