Getting to know Undertow

Having made a bold and confident statement within his career, Undertow is no stranger to the stage. The Australian rapper has recently returned to the scene to release his upcoming EP ‘On Sight’. We sit down with him to get to know him a little bit more ahead its release.

How did you first get into music?

I started playing guitar at age 12. I played guitar and sang in a band called Not Negotiable from the age of 16-21, and shortly after that I started writing raps and performing as well. Both my first time hosting a rave or rapping to hip hop was in 1997 and I just continued on from there.

What is something you wish you told yourself when you were first starting out in the music industry?

Don’t get lazy with recording. (laughs). You get so caught up in doing shows, partying (well I did) that continuing on a constant path of recording is difficult. I have a decent number of releases but I feel I should probably have more by now. This next upcoming release has got me back on the horse so expect a bunch of new music from Undertow.

How did you develop your flow?

I have been doing shows of all types of music (Hardcore, Drum and bass, Garage, Reggae and Hip Hop) for a long time so I guess it’s a multitude and a mix of those styles melted into one. As every writer does, it’s also hours and hours of penning bars, working on patterns and constructing syllables. I guess it’s just morphed into what it is today.

What’s next for you now?

I am going to be doing some music with Dj Maniak on production, a Sydney DJ who I do live shows with. I am going to be working with Kayos who wrote ‘On Sight,’ and teaming up with a UK MC who resides in Sydney called Ellaz on a collaboration project. I plan to continue working on music, and hopefully be able to tour or host some slamming parties when we get out of this mess.
