MarVes & UNYKE Discuss The Behind The Scenes Of Their Hit Track ‘The Underground’

MarVes & UNYKE are two talented DJs and music producers that are ready to take the Electronic Dance music world by a storm. Their own style and signature sound is evident in their latest release ‘The Underground’, which serves as a perfect collaboration between them, positioning them as fresh emerging talent worthy of attention and praise.

Blending the best of these both worlds, ‘The Underground’ is a perfect Future Rave track that showcases the skills and talents of these gifted artists, having as a result an impressive uplifting track with dark Techno undertones that will surely become a new hit.

We sat down with MarVes & UNYKE to ask them more about the production behind ‘The Underground’.

Hi MarVes & UNYKE, how are things going?

Hey, things are going good for us right now! A lot of support from DJs and media around the world and we are super happy with this release already.

‘The Underground’ is out now, can you tell us what inspired the track?

We were looking for a statement. A statement to plant the structure for our presence in Future Rave and Techno. It was important to design an iconic signature Future Rave synth that also works great in Techno. We are so happy with how it turned out at the end. It was easy to work on it because we already knew the direction of it.

Does the track have specific musical or sonic influences?

The track originates from the desire to marry the darkness of Techno with the euphoric, epic sounds of Future Rave. The signature of the main synth is based on a balanced fit between overdriven perfect fifth harmonies played by two layers of saw wave synths.

While the 7 semitones space of a perfect fifth works for most notes in the track’s key, there is one root note for which the fifth harmony spacing is 6 semitones. We are actually playing this harmony wrong – using a 7-semitone spacing to bring tension to the melody resolution. While this wouldn’t usually work well, in ‘The Underground’s’ context it brings just the right detuned tension that the melody needs to marry well with ongoing Techno elements.

What samples or plugins did you use?

We use a combination between our own sample libraries and famous popular ones available online. The tightness of the track mostly comes from combining the right elements together to come up with a new 3rd special one. There isn’t a secret weapon really. Just what we felt was right to be merged or fitted together for this context. An incredible inspiration for the track were a few kicks that UNYKE designed himself on Serum. They sounded amazing with the deep dark energy that built the foundation bringing the track to where it is now.

For the lead synth we used two Serum oscillators set to saw waves and spanned 7 semitones apart. MarVes did an incredible job here. Using just a single layer of Serum he designed a powerful, wide and full bodied synth that fills the entire space of the Future Rave drop.

How did the collaboration between you two come about?

We’d known each other for a while through supporting each other’s music. Having a great relationship and with both of us heading the same direction in our careers, it made sense to have a chat and discuss a collab – we were up to it immediately. The first idea came very quickly and the process from then on was so smooth.

What would you like to achieve with this release?

Our main goal was to sign this to a good label that provides for a good exposure and gets our names out there to be noticed by more established producers. What we have achieved so far is amazing! Future Rave Music did an outstanding job with the promotion and support campaigns. Famous names started supporting the track hours before it was even released! It opened so many doors to collaborations and contact with people we’ve always looked up to.

What did you learn from working on this track?

We have learnt a lot from each other during this project – from new mixing techniques to interesting arrangement and sound selection choices. This is such an important and satisfying side from a successful collaboration!

How does this track differ from previous releases?

It is something new – we managed to combine approaches from several genres we have produced before. At the same time, it has a refreshing new depth and darkness that we hadn’t implemented before. A great deal of sparkle from each one’s signature moves presented our styles in a new way.

Can you describe the song to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?

The song itself it’s a Mainstage oriented track. With big, powerful drops and more relaxing breakdowns to give it some contrast during the whole track.

A child of merging several genres, this release represents a new chapter in UNYKE’s career while affirming MarVes’ unique synth design taking over the entire sound stage.

Paired with the magical voice of Manuela Kuzmanova, this track is the perfect balance between futuristic electronics and the depth of a fairy-tale-like ambient environment.

Listening to the entire piece takes the listener on an emotional energy journey through the endless dimensions of our imagination.

What’s coming up for you?

We’re both working on a lot of new music for next year, and proceeding to explore the dimensions of this new genre. We are working both on collaborations and singles together and with other producers.

Ongoing big projects are on the way but you’re going to have to keep tuned and await to hear what is cooking now.
