Social Studies | Bedouine

Welcome to Social Studies – a place where we celebrate our favourite artist’s social media accounts. No matter how firmly your finger might be on the pulse, we know that there’s simply not enough time in the day to keep track, with so many great accounts out there in the ether. But never fear – we’ve got these #SocialStudies on lockdown.

This week’s pick comes in the effortless style and down to earth allure of gorgeous folk troubadour, Bedouine. Her social media feeds are a revitalising mix of positivity and beautiful aesthetic – proving that social media isn’t all about the FOMO.

Bedouine’s Instagram feed is the visual equivalent of her music. The soft, earthy colour scheme embodies the sound of her delicate retro-folk.

In keeping with her thoughtful lyrics, Bedouine’s socials are full of self-awareness, positivity and gratitude.

Why am I smiling, you ask (maybe) ? Maybe it was to mask the several rounds of sobbing during the filming of this song. After reading an excerpt and artist statement about the complexities of our beloved California and its receding coastline and its borrowed water and trees, I felt a swelling sense of helplessness. I began to write something to the opposition as if to say “ok I’ll bite, climate change is a hoax, so inform me, what’s your take on the cause of our disappearing coastline and melting ice caps and record heat and flooding etc etc. And why are most all of our scientists gravely mistaken? I’m listening.” It was bittersweet to see video of Bernie ask a similar question to Scott Pruitt, the man up for the EPA administrator and Rick Perry, the man up for Secretary of Energy. The recent protests were encouraging but how does that materialize to shape our politician’s platforms? The closest thing I can come up with is putting my money where my mouth is and pulling it from big banks as well as shopping only local or used as much as possible. Corporate personhood and Citizens United ( to name a few components of the dark side ) wont have my measly dollars shaping political platforms for their own greedy gain if I can help it and there’s my 2 cents. If we all protected our measly dollars they would be measly no more! She is also the ultimate in fashion goals – think chiffon scarfs, adorable peasant dresses and on point colour combos.  A total retro babe.

If that’s not enough to convince you, then maybe some of her graceful live performances will do the trick. Her soft fingerpicking and warm, honey-coated vocals are just divine.
