Track of the day: Sylvan Esso – ‘Kick Jump Twist’

Sylvan Esso have finally released a video for ‘Kick Jump Twist’, the B-side to their recent single ‘Radio’. Hurrah!

A long-standing live favourite, the Mimi Cave-directed clip does everything its title suggests with a mesmerising performance from dancer Gary Reagan, writhing, spinning, leaping and pulling off all manner of spirited contortion in a dank, dark, dusty room… a metaphor, perhaps, for the situation the North Carolinian duo – and the rest of America – currently find themselves in. Kicking out against the darkness of the times, perhaps?

Cave herself elaborates, saying: “We shot the video two days after the election, and we were all very much having our own processes with what had happened. Everything was so fresh that the crew’s moods were generally a mix of deer-in-headlights, sadness and anger. At the same time, we couldn’t help but feel a visceral excitement and connection to seeing Gary dance his heart out all day. It was like he was channelling all our chaotic energy into every take.”

The band – Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn – are currently working on their sophomore album and have dotted in a few European dates across the next few months, along with a handful of USA festival dates. The full schedule is as follows:
