We Gonna Hit The Road – Interview with Weatherbird

Blog www.live4ever.uk.com said that you are the best unsigned band in the UK. But you are signed to End Of The Trail Records. So signed or unsigned?

We work with End of the Trail Records, but we’re not signed with them, they don’t ask of their bands to sign contracts cos they’re cool like that. I guess we’re unsigned.

Does it make any difference nowadays to band to be signed or unsigned? Does it matter?

Well, if you’re signed to some giant label, you’re gonna get a s*** load of money and therefore your music will get more promo because most major radio stations or magazines are only interested in what they’re paid to be interested in. So it does make a difference due to the whole ‘its not what you know, its who you know’ ethic that’s poisoning the industry.

Your new song Johnny Strange is about…?

A guy with an alter-ego that’s much more strange than he is, the second voice in your head. Like when you’re walking across a bridge and look down, and your brain goes ‘wouldn’t it be weird if I just jumped off now?’. Its very schizophrenic, but not as serious as that sounds. Its mostly completely made up.

Who from your band is the most similar to Johnny Strange described in the song? Who is the stranges person in your band?

The guy that only we can see. He’s Johnny Strange. And he looks like Jonah Hill dressed as Mrs Doubtfire…

Lot of people and reviews say that your music is brilliant. Do you personally think that your music is brilliant? If yes, why?

I don’t think its brilliant, that’s the wrong way for someone in the band to look at it. But yeah, I do like our music, I wouldn’t make it if I didn’t! It’ll take way more people to say its ‘brilliant’ for me to believe it is, and that’s the day my head grows too big and explodes, so I won’t be able to enjoy it for long.

Your vocalist you looks like young Mick Jagger. And sounds a bit like him, to be honest. Are you the Rolling Stones of XXI century?

No f*** way man. That’s not meant to be an insult to them or anything, that’s just not our scene. And they’re at that ‘ten minutes before the snare hits the audience cos we’re so big’ stage, which we’re a million miles away from. So we can’t really relate to them.

I love your song I Might Be More Than You Know. What the song is about?

It’s the complete opposite of ‘Johnny Strange’, as its about something real, a specific situation. Its about when someone is undervaluing you, and taking you for a moron, so you almost arrogantly think to yourself – ‘watch your fucking back, cos I might be more than you know’. Maybe that should’ve been the lyrics.

Whats next fort Weathebird?

Right now, rehearsal tomorrow. But generally we’re going back in the studio with Romesh Dodangoda in a couple of weeks, and then releasing our debut EP in September/October. I’m pretty sure we’re gonna hit the road around that time too.
