Two fingers to the norm – Interview with London rock band K

I speak with Fiachra, the vocalist of London rock band K, about their new songs, Amy Winehouse, playing gig at KOKO, living forever and fishing.

Piotr Balkus: What’s your new song “Too young to die” is about?

Fiachra: Its about fulfilling potential. Not conforming, sticking to your guns, two fingers to the norm. That sort of thing.

In the video to this song we see at the end the poster with Amy Winehouse. Did she inspire your band in any way?

She inspired us not to waste an amazing beautiful raw talent like hers being battered all the time to the point where you can’t actually perform. I find the whole thing really sad. I wouldn’t say she had a direct musical influence on us as such though I love a lot of her stuff, but we put it up at the end just to pay our respects as fellow musicians at the loss of such a wonderful and rare talent at that incredibly popular but tragic age of 27. She could have been one of the greats and was definitely too young to die.

You are playing KOKO 19th July. What people can expect from your gig there?

We’re putting everything into this. We’ve been waiting a long time to play this venue again. Expect a full on balls out rock’n’roll show, loud, energetic and unapologetic with a dash of booze and a sprinkling of love.

What does the K mean? Can you explain please the secret behind this letter? Why this letter is your “weird obsession”?

I cannot explain the secret behind our name K and the importance of this sacred letter otherwise it wouldn’t be a secret anymore.

Is your drummer related to Liam Gallagher? He looks like him.

No, but he is however related to me. He’s my not so little, little brother coming in at 6.2” the long streak of piss that he is! Strangely enough he got to the last few in a casting a couple of weeks ago for Liam Gallaghers clothing label ‘Pretty Green’ but apparently he looked too mod for the campaign? Can’t bloody win!

What’s in your opinion the best band in the world, apart from K?

Around at the minute I’d have to say… Primal Scream, Kasabian, Tame Impala… Oh, and The Beatles.

How long you’d like to live?

In the words of Noel Gallagher, I wanna ”live forever.” No, just until my penis is only used for urination or when Led Zepp are a little on the loud side.

Would you like to go to heaven or hell. And why hell?

I’d like to see the guest list for both firstly if at all possible? Heavens got a nicer immediate ring to it but if its just me Cliff Richard and Parkinson playing scrabble then I’m not arsed really although apparently Jesus is a right laugh once you get to know him? I think Id rather have a strong year round tan and be dancing on hot coals to the resident hell band made up of Jim Morrison/ Robert Plant on Vocals, Keith Moon and John Bonham on drums, Jacob Holebon on bass and Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards on guitars. Mind you, Keith Richards will probably still be alive somehow.

Is that true that you love fishing? If not, what’s your hobby apart music?

Never actually been fishing but heard of its lovely calming effects as a hobby from my mate Duncan. But I just can’t believe it can be that much fun. I have promised to give it a proper go this Summer… If we get one. Hobbies apart from music? Drinking, air guitar and long walks in the park. We do it as a band bonding exercise where we all walk in the park holding hands singing five part harmony to our favourite musicals.
