Q&A with Australian artist Mark Howard

Following the release of his latest pop-rock single “Scarlette”, we got to chat with Mark Howard about his artistry, new release, and upcoming plans.

– Can you please start by introducing yourself and tell us how you started your music career?
My name is Mark Howard, I live in Cape Woolamai on the south coast of Victoria. My music career began in Grade 2 when I sang ‘Waltzing Matilda’ for the end of year class concert.

– Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, “Scarlette”?
‘Scarlette’ was written about a lost love who told me she wanted to take her own life. A few years later, she did. The song explores the regret and sorrow I’ve held onto.

– Your music often transcends genre boundaries, blending elements of folk, rock, blues, and alt-country. How do you approach incorporating diverse musical influences into your work?
I always ask myself, how can I best service the story of the song. The feeling of the song and the story generally dictate the stylistic direction and instrumentation.
– You’ve shared your musical tales across 45 countries, earning critical acclaim worldwide. How have your diverse cultural experiences and global travels influenced your songwriting and performance style?
I’ve learned that audiences all over the world want to hear and feel your truth, and on stage, you must leave nothing behind
– Nature seems to be a significant source of inspiration for you, particularly the ocean and the outdoors. How do these natural elements influence your creative process and the themes explored in your music?
All the elements are there for you to draw from when you’re willing to tap into them and the ocean has always provided me with endless fascination and mystery.
– What’s coming next for you in 2024?
I’m very excited to have more new music in the pipeline, a UK tour and dates through VIC, TAS, NSW and exploring some uncharted territory in Far North Queensland.
