Q&A with rising artist Ari Amun

Ari Amun is an American singer-songwriter based in both Atlanta, Georgia, and New York City, who prides herself in her original music and uplifting melodies. Amun’s soulful voice truly shines through as an upcoming vocalist for her generation and adds a differentiating tone to pop and R&B. We got to chat with her around the release music video for her track “Human Nature”.

– Can you please start by telling us who’s behind the name of Ari Amun?

Hi! Fun fact, my full first name is Ariana, and I merged my middle name, Amun, with my nickname Ari to become Ari Amun. I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia with a burning passion for music and knew without a doubt in my mind I’d be a performer. Throughout my life, I’ve had a deep passion for the arts, whether drawing, filmmaking, writing stories, acting, and of course, songwriting. I believe that there is no point in settling in your life, or being afraid of achieving your dreams because it feels out of reach. I want to pursue a life with no regrets and focus on what makes me, me — music. Ari Amun is a vocalist, songwriter, pianist, performer, a risk taker, but Ariana is the heart, and I want to share all of who I truly am with the world.

What made you want to pursue a career in the music industry?

Growing up, I’ve always had a very supportive family. Given that and my musical dreams, it was only natural that I would want to pursue a singing career. My father has a passion for creating music and always allowed me to explore the musical side of who I was. The more I explored, the more I realized it was what I was meant to do. I idolized many great singers like Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Chaka Khan, Adele, Lauryn Hill, and the list goes on and on. I wanted to emulate their power as women who could withstand such a demanding industry.

– Can you tell us more about the creative process behind your latest track “Human Nature”?

Madhi, a family friend, sent me a couple of tracks he produced and one of them stood out to me. The phrase “you’re the dream” kept popping into my head and I began writing everything that came to mind. About 10 minutes later, I had a full song. My writing process is hard to explain because it often feels like it comes from thin air. In the back of my mind, I had been frustrated with the idea of perfection, and how sometimes it prevents us from seeing people for who they truly are. “Human Nature” is the perspective of seeing people without rose-colored glasses, and getting back to the root of our own “Human Nature”.

– You’ve decided to release a music video for the track a few months after its release. So what made you want to film a music video for this song in particular?

I wanted to visually express the juxtaposition between the superficiality that is so prominent in our society, and the natural beauty that is within us. Sometimes it’s hard to look within and realize you are judging someone, or even yourself, on just the surface level. This is why I took on a character and a storyline in the music video that exposed my own flaws. I also was excited to release something that had so much nature and greenery in it because I feel we overlook the abundant beauty surrounding us in our everyday lives. I also thought this song had the perfect amount of sass and confidence I want to exude to the public.

– What can fans expect from you in the future?

I am always looking for ways to expand myself as an artist. Whether this is through messages or visuals, I want to leave people with content that makes them think. I am currently working on releasing my next single, along with my first body of work. I also want to continue diving deeper into the theme of “finding things to love about yourself in the world, even when it feels like the world is against you.” I am also excited to present different facets of myself vocally as I still have a lot more to show!
