Q&A with singer-songwriter Dom Malin

Right on time for the release of his latest single ‘Hurricane’, we caught up with Midlands-based singer, songwriter and musician Dom Malin. With us, he delves into his influences, collaboration process, his upcoming German tour and future releases.

Can you share the inspiration behind your latest single, “Hurricane”, and how it explores the transformative power of love in the aftermath of disaster?

‘Hurricane’, stemmed from the aftermath of a significant relationship ending. It represents the emotional wreckage left behind, yet also signifies the potential for rebuilding amidst the chaos. Through ‘Hurricane’, I wanted to convey the journey of finding peace with the past and embracing the future, even when it seems obscured by rubble.

One particular moment in the song, found in Verse 3, describes encountering a guiding figure who brings warmth and colour into my life, dispelling the lingering greyness of the past. It’s a vivid representation of love’s transformative influence. Additionally, the chorus reinforces the

resilience of love, with lines like ‘But as long as I’ve got you here beside me to hold, I won’t lose my house, I won’t lose my home.’ These words highlight the stability and security found in love, even amidst life’s most turbulent times.

– Could you tell us about your collaboration with producer Jonathan Anderson on “Hurricane” and how it contributed to the song’s sound and atmosphere?

Working with Jon on “Hurricane” was a dynamic partnership that significantly shaped the sound and atmosphere of the song. Jon’s experience producing and mixing with artists like Ocie Elliott and Field Guide caught my attention, as I admired the sonic qualities he brought to their music.

His versatility as a musician was invaluable to the project. Not only did he contribute his expertise in acoustic elements, but he also brought his skills as a multi-instrumentalist to the table.

The most impactful suggestion Jon made was to change the song’s pace. By altering the tempo, the music supported the overall message.

– Your upcoming tour in Germany includes several dates with Luna Keller. What are you most looking forward to about these performances and touring in general?

It has started to become a yearly occurrence! We did our first one in 2023, met some incredible people and they wanted us back. I’m so excited about every show because it offers something unique and different. New cities, landscapes, and audiences keep it exciting.

– How does performing live compare to recording in the studio for you, and do you have any memorable moments from past performances that stand out to you?

Performing live and recording in the studio entails different mindsets. Live, you’re an entertainer, feeding off the crowd and sharing a moment that will never happen again. The interaction and excitement are what I thrive on, and the energy is infectious. In the studio, the focus is on the soundscape, instrumentation, and textures that musically convey the message.

– Your journey in music began at a young age. Can you share more about that pivotal moment at the school talent show and how it shaped your musical path?

I distinctly remember returning home from a school show, sitting with my guitar, and writing my first song. I performed Green Day’s – Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) at the talent show and the feeling of empowerment left me wanting to explore my style and approach to music. My musicianship skills allowed me to find ideas that resonated with me and from there I could find the words to express myself. From that night I’ve not looked back.

– What do you hope listeners take away from “Hurricane” and your music in general?

I aim to leave people with a lasting impression and a memorable melody to hum. It’s important to me that my music is catchy yet substantial, focusing not only on the chorus but on the entire composition. ‘Hurricane’ is an example of drawing from personal experiences and using the elements to create a soundscape that takes you on a journey through poetic melancholy.

– Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you in terms of future releases or projects after “Hurricane”?

Fans can expect musical variation, personal growth, and themes I haven’t explored before. I want to offer something for everyone and challenge the expectations people have. I want people to be excited about what is next rather than expecting more of the same. I will still operate in the same ecosystem but one that pushes the dynamics and bridges gaps between genres of Folk rock, American, and Indie.
