Wearing wigs and heels is hard f***ing work – interview with Queens Of Pop

“Queens Of Pop are brothers Ged and James Weir from Manchester, England. To their near million new fans they are much better known as the outrageously funny ‘Queens of Pop’. Formed by accident in October 2012, the brothers’ comedic timing and uncanny ability to deliver the perfect parody has seen them build a huge online audience over the last 8 months. This culminated in them receiving almost half a million youtube views for their excruciatingly funny take on Atomic Kitten’s ‘Whole Again’ which ironically has seen the real Kerry Katona become one of their biggest fans. The Kitten’s parody sits alongside their wicked takes on Girls Aloud, Steps, Kylie, Taylor Swift and Coronation Street’s Deirdre Barlow and Sally Webster and has seen ‘Queens of Pop’ become nothing short of an online sensation…”

Piotr Balkus: You are brothers, but you were formed “by accident”. How it happened?

Queens Of Pop: Yes we are brothers and we are very close, almost like twins in some ways. We both love pop music and pop culture and since being little boys spent hours watching Top of the Pops, concerts on video and dressing up dancing in our bedroom together to our cassette of the Blonde Ambition. We basically decided to format what we have been doing for years but with our own comedy twist. We sat down and decided to re-write some famous pop songs and make them funny and then came the fun part, dressing up and making the video’s. The success of our video’s online has been amazing and we are having so much fun touring the UK and meeting our new fans.

You come from Manchester. What you can say good about this city?

We love coming from and living in Manchester. It’s a great city and our family & friends are here too. We have a huge following in Manchester and can’t wait to perform on the main stage at this years Pride in August.

You recorded parody of Beyonce “Irreplaceable”. Do you personally like her songs (and her booty)…?

We love Beyonce she is a Queen of Pop and an ICON. We usually decide to parody people we like or admire for some strange reason. If they happen to be big news at the time of our video that just makes it even funnier and more relevant.

In one of your songs you says bad things about One Direction. If you were girls, which member of One Direction would have a biggest chance to get into your pants and why?

We don’t need to be girls to want to get in to the pants of One Direction and we don’t say anything bad about them. In fact we are quite nice when H from Steps says “One Direction I would fuck them all” and little Harry Styles should take that as a massive compliment. We also reference them in our Taylor Swift song too but that’s Harry’s fault for being a ***!

You dress as women and you act as them, so probably experience the feeling how it is to be the woman. Is it good feeling?

No, it’s not a good feeling as wearing a wig and 6 inch heels is hard f*** work. We like being the Queens of Pop though but we don’t really experience what it is like to be a woman to be honest. As soon as we take our final bow the lipstick is off, and the jeans and pumps go back on.

What’s the craziest thing you ever done during the show?

This is quite a weird question to be honest as we don’t see anything we do as crazy. It is pretty normal for us to have fun on stage so if that means stealing fans drinks, poppers or boyfriends is crazy then I guess we are. I don’t think there is anything crazy about 2 hairy brothers dressing up as Beyonce or Atomic Kitten for hundreds of people, do you?

What colour of wigs you like the most and why?

The colour of wigs is not down to personal preference they just need to match the celebrity we are working on.

What are your plans for Summer and Autumn 2013?

We have an amazing season lined up with several Pride festivals and live venue dates. We are appearing all across the UK in the next few weeks including Glasgow, Dublin, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham and then we are heading back to Gran Canaria too so it’s all go….see you there and follow us on twitter @queensofpoptv for tour dates and information.
