“21” is a new British girlband from London. Dani, Paige, Holly, Sophie and Ellis are on the mission to bring back Girl Power. I spoke with the them about holiday in Egypt, covering Avicii, their music influences, difference between them and other girlbands, and what is “munchkin” and how to become one…
Piotr Balkus: You just came back from holiday. How was Egypt?
21: Egypt was so lush! Really hot and so much fun! We all rode a camel for the first time and Ellis nearly fell off!
Can you describe each girl in the band, Dani, Paige, Holly, Sophie and Ellis in few words?
Well… Dani is girlie and always giggling! Paige is the perfectionist with a big voice. Holly gives the best cuddles and eats lots of chocolate! When sophie isn’t flirting with the boys – she mothers us! She makes us tea! And Ellis is our very own performing monkey with all her impressions and silly jokes!
You recently recorded cover of “Wake Me Up” by Avicii. Why you picked that particular song to cover?
We picked Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” because we all love that song, it’s got such a summery, feel good vibe about it! It was number 1 in the charts recently and thought it’d be cool if we did a female version!
You added some sun and fun to it. Is a fun, joy and happiness a message in your songs?
Bringing the holiday back to England! Yeah definitely we always have so much fun when singing together and it’s important for artists to make happy, fun music so that listeners feel good too! Smiles all round!
I would describe “21” as Spice Girls mixed with Saturdays. How you would describe yourself?
Oooh we love the Spice! We’re bringing back Girl Power – it’s our mission! We all learn from each other. We take things from every former girl band and we are evolving all the time. Sharing is caring! We have a “60’s meets today” vibe! It’s pretty funky and we love the style!
Which artists inpire you the most?
Like most girls we love artists with a bit of bite! Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and Jessie J are all amazing artists who promote women’s independence! Girl power! Told you we’re bringing it back!
There are many girlbands on the market nowadays. What makes 21 different from other girlbands?
We are all different as individuals and I think it creates a rare quality within the band! Other girl bands out there are pretty generic and pure pop at the moment, but with our 60’s twist we bring something completely different to the table.
What is munchkin and how someone can become a munchkin?
