A new chapter of J-pop begins with the unveiling of 美麗-Bi-ray, a bold new vocal group unveiled by legendary producer and rock icon Yoshiki. Debut single ‘Butterfly’ introduces the group with a sense of ambition and composer finesse; a slow-building, harmony-led ballad that gradually bloomed into a textured, cinematic, emotionally rich anthem.
Opening sparse and stripped-back, ‘Butterfly’ squares the vocals at the centre. Each of the four members: Emi, Hinata, Cocomi and Michelle brings their own tone and energy, creating a layered, expressive and carefully balanced final product. There’s no rush to the climax, allowing the track to unfold with patience and its weight to settle in.
Yoshiki comments, “Each of their voices is one of a kind, they are vocalists who can take on the world.”
The track is also the first release on Yoshiki’s new label Melodee, distributed globally via Virgin Music Group. Alongside the audio release, a music video filmed in Los Angeles, acting as the group’s visual debut, pairs sweeping visuals with vulnerability. Backed by a world-class production team and clear creative vision, this won’t be the last time we hear the name 美麗-Bi-ray.
