Anja Kotar delivers another subtle yet magical dose of melancholy pop in debut EP ‘Songs from Isolation’

Anja Kotar has undoubtedly had limitless rise since lockdown occurred and hit us all hard. Not for this San Jose based creator though, who instead of getting caught up in the madness, started writing luscious pop songs effortlessly encompassing the feelings we were all going through. This started with ‘Tuscany’ which is laden sliced dosage of feel-good pop that you could just play all day long whilst sitting in the sun (or in your garden at the point of release).

With other highly acclaimed releases such as ‘Love Song’, ‘Simple’ and ‘Movie’ following suit in the same light, Kotar has been building towards releasing her first body of work, aptly titled ‘Songs from Isolation’ and the lead and closing track ‘Midnight in Paris’ feels like the real statement of the record. A French Chanson inspired song, there is a real celebratory theme implemented, on purpose from Anja here, as of course we are now out of lockdown, and can go and spend our weeknights in Paris if we so chose to. The whole EP feels like a journey of self discovery for Anja, and we have been well and truly taken along for the ride throughout.

Speaking more on the lead single, Anja explained:

“‘Midnight in Paris’ is about the celebration of post-Covid life, portrayed as dancing through the night streets of Paris. I like to think of it as a sister song to Tuscany – that one opens the EP and Paris closes it off. Tuscany was written very soon after the gravity of this pandemic started dawning on the world and served as a daydream escape from the increasingly gloom reality. Midnight in Paris, on the other hand, comes at a much more hopeful time when there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After enduring through a year of lockdowns and our lives being turned on their heads, now, dancing through Paris seems less of a mental escape and more of a reality in planning.”
