Band member shot at SXSW

The musician was shot during a robbery at the festival.

SXSW started on 10th March but was quickly marred by the robbery. Michael Sanders, of local band Löwin, was shot in the shoulder as he was walking home on Friday night after seeing A Giant Dog. He had his wallet and phone stolen during the attack. The band have confirmed on Facebook that he is expected to make a full recovery, but he will not be able to perform with the band during the festival.

At last year’s event, a man started firing his gun into the air. There were no injuries, but the man was arrested following the event.

During this year’s festival, an Italian band, Soviet Soviet, were arrested as they tried to enter the country. They were then deported, meaning they could no longer play SXSW or their subsequent US dates. The festival has come under fire for including a clause that states they can contact the authorities regarding the immigration status of the acts. However, they have since promised that they would remove this in time for next year’s festival.
