Four-piece Blue Slate have returned with a brand new release, ‘Melody in Melancholy’, arriving after they dropped their debut EP This Is How I Sleep At Night earlier this year. This fuzzy, sprawling storm of a track brings raw urgency and intersperses it with a melancholic spaciousness and reflection.
Grinding distortions and hammering rhythms give way to ethereal shoegaze, a throwback to their genre lineage with a fresh tinge on top, courtesy of Dublin’s post-punk scene.
The band explains, “Melody in Melancholy was the first song we went into record after the release of ‘This is how I sleep at Night’, our debut EP, and we had a short time away from the studio to sit with the release. After some time away from recording to plan the release of the EP, it felt right to get back in and begin preparing the next release.
The song itself is a reflection on how we can sell ourselves to different things, whether that be to people or substances. The lyrics are based around questioning the reason we always go back to someone or something that has harmed us in one way or another, attempting to figure out if it’s due to hatred or due to comfort.”
Following support slots at Beyond the Pale and Supersonic Paris, support from UK and Irish press, and a sold-out string of shows in Ireland, Blue Slate have earned a cult following, and this latest single definitely has the capacity to supercharge their progress.
