Dolce Blue return with moody new single ‘Typical Kind of Fun’

A four-piece originating from the Western Australian town of Kalmunda, Dolce Blue has been introducing a gracefully melancholic, raw sound since its debut in 2018. Garnering attention with their first album, thirteen-track project Forever Is Too Long, they saw support from national radio and signed with multi-time WA Music Label of the Year winners, Blue Grey Pink..

Supporting Sly Withers, Shag Rock, and Lucy Peach, the band recently concluded their first nationwide tour, now looking ahead to a deluxe edition of their second album Sweet Melancholy which sees some new singles that didn’t make the cut for the original emerge.

The latest teaser for the upcoming major release is the delicate duet of ‘Typical Kind of Fun’. Told as a gracious narrative between two vocalists, the track is surrounded by plucky guitar licks, soft, clean chord rhythms and the steady wandering of the bass and drums. The subtle build-ups don’t make for any bursting-out climaxes, instead opting for an all-surrounding emotional experience, slowly drawing listeners into the sombre nature of the words. Contrasting bright instrumentation with a shadowy and sorrowful thematic journey, Dolce Blue continue to be unique in the presentation of its sound, able to balance moodiness with deeply buried joy.

Vocalist and songwriter Veronica shares her thoughts on the track, “Brody came to me with some songs he had started writing, one of them was just a snippet which is the opening few lines of Typical Kind of Fun that I felt really drawn to.

I could relate to the idea of somebody having a hold on you and the disappointment and betrayal of finding out that that person is not really who you thought they were, so I expanded on it to form the rest of the song. It’s always just a song that’s stuck in my head, and I’m glad that we’ve finally recorded it and Brody’s built up the confidence to share his singing voice!”
