Appearing on the stages of North Sea Jazz, Sziget, Pinkpop, Leeds Festival, and Creamfields, jazztronica duo Emulov have garnered a reputation for modern production and nostalgic feels. Landing editorial slots on streaming platforms their blends give a slice of innovation to the genre.

With an effortless blend of jazz, funk and electronica, Emulov’s latest single, ‘Mute’, laces the music with a captivating old-school feel. The instrumental is refined but raw and the production finds a crossroads between capturing the moment and highlighting creative intricacy. Made in collaboration with MONODUKE, the trio of musicians send the lo-fi aesthetic into a new era, fuelled with Dilla hip-hop and bluesy UK jazz grooves.

Detail in the top lines leads a shimmering, near-vocal synth to highlight the upper frequencies and in the same breath, there’s a battle going on between an electronic bass squelch and a natural, sliding sound. It’s these elements that come together to make the track such a vibrant, body-moving experience. With instrumental music like this, the feeling has to come first, and Emulov hand it over in spades.

The pair add, “Mute was a blast to work on and a delightful one stop session. After that we visited Daan Herweg aka MONODUKE who did a one-take piano solo on the spot. This took 3, but no edits anywhere…”
