Exclusive interview: Berlin newcomers stockdale take shape in paper thin

We were lucky enough to have a chat with Berlin’s newest hip-hop influenced group stockdale. It’s clear that the trio have a wide range of influences and are a modern day group in every sense. Unlike everyone else, Covid was a catalyst for stockdale. Through misfortune, they found inspiration and ended up with paper thin, a favourite here at Music Crowns. Very much a collaborative process, we get some insight into the bands thinking around that time. Make sure to check them out as they are not to be missed.

Tell us about yourself as a band/artist?

We’re a trio of friends from Berlin that makes pop rap music

What got you into music?

Nomé: my friends were in a band and their singer quit, so they asked me to step in

pilgrim: I started piano at 5, fiddle at 7, my fiddle teacher got me into music, and later I started performing in musical theater.

johdi: I took a few guitar lessons as a kid, but I really got into it when I was making beats and I moved away from my rapper friends. Soon after I started working at a recording studio.

How would you describe your sound?

pop rap, a party where all our individual influences hang out and bond emotionally

What is your favourite venue to play?

anything small, dark, sweaty and anonymous.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Nomé: Robert Glasper

pilgrim: Gillian Welch

johdi: Gorillaz and The Avalanches

What is your creative process, and do you think it differs from others?

Usually we’ll at get in a room and listen to some rough beats, then we’ll all write a part, and often fill out the track with some more instruments. at the end of everything we’ll finalize a structure for the song. we repeat this process until we have a large selection of songs to choose from for a final project.

What is special about this song/album to you?

this track feels like arriving at the end of the sound we were going for on our last project. And now that we’ve done that in a way we’re satisfied with, the door is open to try new things. It’s a jumping off point for the future.
