Five Fresh Tracks for New Music Friday

Friday, is it? New music, you’re wanting?

Well, we’ve got it for you. Five Fresh Tracks to soundtrack your weekend.

Featuring tracks from JGrrey, The Teskey Brothers, Wiley, Mahalia and BDRMM, this is one playlist you won’t want to turn off.

JGrrey ‘Better Off’

Combining elements of R&B, neo-soul, jazz, and funk, ‘Better Off’ is the latest single from London’s own JGrrey.

Slapping basslines and a soaring horn section, combined with a lilting and soulful delivery from JGrrey, make ‘Better Off’ a mature and fresh take on what it is to disentangle oneself from a toxic relationship. She explains: “[Its] about realising you don’t actually need the person you’ve been investing all your energy into…It’s that sudden ’I’m so much better than this’ epiphany you have after wasting your time on someone”.

The Teskey Brothers – ‘So Caught Up’

Melbourne’s The Teskey Brothers have just unveiled their latest track ‘So Caught Up’.

The track marks the third and final single from the band’s forthcoming album, Run Home Slow, out 2nd August.

Combining elements of modern soul, pop and funk, the track makes for a slight departure in sound from previous singles. Of the new direction, guitarist Liam Teskey says: “[We] tried lots of different things with this track to see where it fits with The Teskey Brothers.

No matter how hard we tried to steer it away from being a pop banger, it just came out in the song”.

With even Australia’s own Chris Hemsworth declaring himself a fan, you know this band must be special.

Wiley feat. Tory Lanez, Kranium and Dappy‘My One’

In recent months, Wiley has been dropping crumbs all over Instagram that new music was on the way. Now, just in time for summer, the Godfather of Grime has gifted us a dancehall banger with ‘My One’.

Featuring Tory Lanez, Kranium and Dappy‘My One’ is catchy with something for everyone and the perfect tune to vibe to this summer.

Wiley’s next album, The Godfather Three’ is out 13th September.

Mahalia feat. Burna Boy – ‘Simmer’

21 year-old songstress and Leicester-native Mahalia has joined forces with afrobeat superstar Burna Boy to bring us ‘Simmer’.

Sampling Beenie Man‘s classic dancehall hit, ‘Who Am I (Sim Simma)’, Mahalia pays homage the right way by ensuring her unique sound and style is at the forefront, and making it more than a mere repackaging of the 1997 island-jam.

Similar to what we’ve seen on his collaborations with the likes of Lily Allen and Dave, Burna Boy uses his verse on ‘Simmer’ to once again showcase his unrivaled talent for seamlessly delivering a whole new dimension to a track.

Following on from ‘I Wish I Missed My Ex’ and ‘Do Not Disturb’, ‘Simmer’ is the third single taken from Mahalia’s forthcoming album Love and Compromise out 6th September.

BDRMM – ‘Question Mark’

Hull-based slacker-shoegaze quintet BDRMM introduce their gently anthemic new single ‘Question Mark’.

Bittersweet lyrics of anxious introspection appear dreamlike and lucid courtesy of frontman Ryan Smith, and, when combined with hazy-guitars and delicate drum-work, produces a track reminiscent of lazy summer nights.

Ryan explains that track’s inspiration is derived from “being told you’ve done something wrong and believing you’ve done something wrong are completely different things.”
